In this Hugo-nominated novel, Neanderthal physicist Ponter Boddit brings Canadian geneticist Mary Vaughan back to his world to explore the near-utopian civilization of the Neanderthals. Boddit serves as a Candide figure, the naive visitor whose ignorance about our society makes him a perfect tool to analyze human tendencies toward violence, over-population, and environmental degradation.

This piece is what some would call a proud pleasure.
Unlike other very enjoyable books that leave you with the guilty feeling of having wasted your time while having fun with a nice read, Sawyer's work on the Neanderthal Parallax, book II is easy to enjoy, yet appealing to the mind. It has a very nice pace, driving the story through very interesting scientific facts that really make you think about the small things in the human nature that lead all the way up to the very structure of society.

I would recommend this book to the person who is drawn to the what ifs of human history, to the lover of anthropology/paleo-anthropology, to the science fiction fan looking for something different than spaceship related stories, and just about anyone who likes the "fiction-books-that-make-you-think-rather-than-just-playing-out-a-fantasy-world" genre.

Now, this is specially for the reader new to the audibook world: I had read book one of this trylogy years ago and even though I wanted to get the second part, I didnt have the time to actually sit down and read, so I never bought it. This is why I decided to try the audiobook: so I could know how the story ends and kill time on my daily commute at the same time. So far its one of the most life quality improving things I've done during the very scornful traffic hours of my life.

Try it, you wont regret it!!

Ishmael is an utterly unique and captivating spiritual adventure which redefines what it is to be human. We are introduced to Ishmael, a creature of immense wisdom. He has a story to tell, one that no human being has ever heard before. It is the story of man's place in the grand scheme, and it begins at the birth of time. This history of the world has never appeared in any schoolbook. "Does the earth belong to man?" Ishmael asks. "Or does man belong to the earth?"

This book takes the reader through a journey to discover the short, clear and concise idea that humanity is not above nature laws and that as agricultural civilization breaks the environmental equilibrium of the planet, men is living in the edge of its own annihilation.

Either we change and save the planet, or we perish and the planet heals itself. Are we to remain in the picture?

What is mankind without nature? What is nature without mankind?

    A fast and effective solution!!

If you have issues juggling your time management and decision making with your everyday life, this is your book!

It will give you a comprehensive method to organize and work on your action items.

It does take a litlle bit of note taking, but once you have the method down, it becomes almost second nature and it helps a lot to become more focused and productive.

And the best thing is you get all this knowledge in less than 3 hours listening time!

PS. I rated 1 on the Story because there is no actual story to be told.

  • Rendezvous with Rama

At first, only a few things are known about the celestial object that astronomers dub Rama. It is huge, weighing more than ten trillion tons. And it is hurtling through the solar system at inconceivable speed. Then a space probe confirms the unthinkable: Rama is no natural object. It is, incredibly, an interstellar spacecraft. Space explorers and planet-bound scientists alike prepare for mankind's first encounter with alien intelligence.

    Story

This is clearly one of the best books in the genre. Even today, almost 40 years later!
I've been craving for this book for years but only now got a chance to get it because with the audio format I dont have to "sit down to read", which is great!

As generally with Clarke's books, there's this overwhelmingly epic, larger than life feeling to the book. You don't specifically get attached to any of the characters, but the atmosphere of the book makes you feel you're being told the greatest story of all time, that you're there to witness the greatest moment in the history of the planet. The narrative focuses on the big picture. On the big questions, on the big scenarios, its larger than people, larger than humanity.

The narration by Peter Ganim, is the voice of an intelligent storyteller. It feels like a chronic being told by a subjet matter expert along with great voice acting that brings the characters to life.

Clarke's mind swiveled around what would happen in the future, without caring much about the technicalities, because as he himself used to say "science always finds a way that is far beyond more amazing than what we can possibly imagine".

    A masterpiece, handsdown.

Dorian Gray, a handsome and narcissistic young man, lives thoughtlessly for his own pleasure. One day, after having his portrait painted, Dorian makes a frivolous Faustian wish: that he should always remain as young and beautiful as he is in that painting, while the portrait grows old in his stead.

The wish comes true, and Dorian soon finds that none of his wicked actions have visible consequences. Realizing that he will appear fresh and unspoiled no matter what kind of life he lives, Dorian becomes increasingly corrupt. Only the portrait grows degenerate and ugly, a powerful symbol of Dorian's internal ruin.

    Robert says: "Excellent rendition"

What made the experience of listening to The Picture of Dorian Gray the most enjoyable?

The story... this is one of my favorite books because of the clear depiction of human nature and the intelligently amusing wilde narrative, which Mr Vance's voice manages to enhance.

What other book might you compare The Picture of Dorian Gray to and why?

Maybe some titles by Kundera, the characters that is.

Which character – as performed by Simon Vance – was your favorite?

    Lord Henry, clearly.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

    Any additional comments?

I didnt think the audiobook would actually match the experience of reading the book... it draws you to keep listening to it all in one sitting. Great performance by Simon Vance.

“Are you there, Satan? It’s me, Madison,” declares the whip-tongued 13-year-old narrator of Damned, Chuck Palahniuk’s subversive new work of fiction. The daughter of a narcissistic film star and a billionaire, Madison is abandoned at her Swiss boarding school over Christmas, while her parents are off touting their new projects and adopting more orphans. She dies over the holiday of a marijuana overdose—and the next thing she knows, she’s in Hell.

I dont know what I was thinking. After half liking Fight Club, I keep trying on Palahniuk and now Im convinced to stop.
First of all, if I wanted to get the chronicle of a hell dweller, I would NEVER choose to talk to a know it all bitter hollow mined 13 yr old girl who knows nothing about life. Granted, she is clever, sometimes half funny, but NOT the perspective anyone would be interested in.

After 7 chapters, this “interview with the damned “ is just a “monologue by a rich 13 yr old girl who happens to be in a funny depiction of a hell”.
It almost feels like she isn’t actually dead, just passed out and dreaming or just plainly on a drug induced hallucination with her neighborhood buddies.
