This book had (in my opinion) such low scientific credibility that it made it hard to get through. I did enjoy the main character, though. I found the 'solution' to be a relatively simple one, and certainly not something that should have taken so long to figure out. Without giving away any spoilers (I hope) I also find it rather ridiculous that what would affect an animal in an urban zoo would also affect animals in very far-away and primitive locations at practically simultaneous times. The writing itself was very good, but the whole plot was weak, and I was disappointed.
Overall I like these books, but my goodness! She goes on and on and on about how much planning she did and how smart she was and how successful as an assassin, yet makes so many mistakes, or overlooks simple things. It gets kind of annoying, but if you can get past that, it is a pretty good story!
This was another great 'in death' book. Again, the characters continue to be spot-on, and yet still grow. The only reason I didn't give this one 5 stars for the story was because she wrote the descriptions of the suspect's actions and emotions so clearly, and he was so totally, utterly hateable. This is the single-most whiney, self-absorbed, selfish, narcissistic character I've ever read about, and he's SO frustratingly annoying!! But the story was really very good, very Robb. I love the way she can have Dallas investigate totally bizarre cases, like the Icove affair, and then a 'simple' murder, and both are just as fascinating to hear when she works through and solve them. I also thought that the narrator was superb - she conveyed emotions so well - she really made the story come alive. I highly recommend this!!
This one was really good. Oberon, as always, is the absolute best character. I am grateful that we didn't have to read all 12 years of apprenticing, and just went to the good stuff. Hell is gruesome, and Loki is demented - I just really appreciate all the thought that goes into all the different God/Goddess/Mythological creature descriptions. I also liked the bit of philosopy where Atticus delves into why Granuaile has such a problem with the Irish Gods (they are more people-like in a pantheon, while monotheists have a more 'perfect' God). And I adore Oberon's love of all meat, especially sausages! Can't wait for Hunted to come out. This series is a MUST GET!!
First of all, Jay Snyder is an excellent reader! I really enjoyed the first book in this series, but this one was a little bit disappointing. If you compare the two books, it seems like they are two different main characters. I understand why Court is a little different here (no spoilers), but it seemed that his lack of sharpness, mistakes, and lapses in paying attention were quite egregious when compared to his almost preternatural awareness in the first book. I enjoyed it enough to buy the 3rd book though...
Yes, because the story was so compelling, and at times so filled with tension, that I might have turned pages faster than I was actually able to absorb the words. The audible version, which was perfectly narrated by Craig Wasson, allowed me to recieve the full effect of the work.
I can't even say the most memorable moment, because that would be a spoiler for anyone who hasn't yet had the pleasure of reading this book.
In particular, I felt he conveyed crucial emotions - you could hear happiness, horror, sadness - he made an amazing story even better.
I laughed during this book, I shamelessly admit to crying at the end - it moved me and it was JUST THAT GOOD!
The way SK avoided common time-travel pitfalls was satisfying. The way he dealt with the whole alternate reality issue was (dare I say it?) - actually plausible! This man could tell a story about eating cornflakes and it would be interesting - with this wealth of story, reasearch and possiblity, combined with his trademark (and effortless) weaving of other stories into his works, makes this truly one of, if not THE, best book I have ever had the pleasure to read. Technically listen to, but there you have it. I would recommed this for absolutely anyone - it's not horror, it's simply amazing!
