""Just the Best""
Classic Heinlein, His second book, and you can see him growing as a truly gifted writer. His style and knowledge of what it was like being a midshipman, and later a navy man shows. You must remember the times Bobert A. Heinlein grew up in, and the trust people had in their government was much different then today. So the idea of circling atomic warheads in orbit, like satilites, the praverbale "sword of Damalces" was not so far fetched.
That it was a complete story, not like the bull crap that Hollywood churns out today. The lazy garbage that has very little story, just a lot of conjecture. Like the last Promethus movie, in which the writers havent done any of the hard work needed to flesh out a story, and just offer us a bunch of pretty pictures, and big Ka--splosions!
He has a fantastic narrators voice and is full of presence and complements the rest of the actors.
When they found the old ship, the long dead Patrol men, who were imortalized in ceremony.
Loved it great for kids, and adults alike.
"Simply the Best!"
I have listened to a dozen times, what a Great story! And the full family cast, Just Tremendous! Love everything they do!
The business opportunities pursued by the twins, and I loved the grand mother who was also an engineer.
The father, I just love his voice, he's been in some of the others done by these guys. It pays to have professional actors! Hats off to the Tobins, they are the best! The narrator is top notch too, he's just as good as anyone working today!
Towards the end, but I don't want to give anything away.
I love most of Heinlein's early stuff! Its just the best! And this full family cast, what a fantastic group they are! I will buy everything they do in Sci-fi.
"More fantasy, than Science"
Wonderful, Imaginative, Good
The time travel, and the descriptions of the different time periods.
Mr Rudnicki is just one of the best, if not the best. He has great range and fantastic delivery.
Ah, It was a god story, though no extreme reactions.
Ben Bova is really good writer.
"Great story! Bova's best!"
Yes, and I have. Though I could do without the terriable intro by Halin Ellison! I get the feeling Ben Bova is friends with Harlin, the way George Lucas is friends with Steve Spielberg; some what temparate, to say the least. And I resent the fact that the "Goyim" cant tell jokes, there are hundreds of non Jews who are very funny! Aside from that, this is a great story, and one of Bova's best.
Ohara, she was spunky!
They are both good.
When the main charactor got thrown in the pool by the guards.
Loved it.
"Good story, but more fantasy than science"
Will Wheaton, great narration. Not Scalzi's best work, but pretty good, I enjoyed it, though not as much as "Old Man's War." Did not like the "he said" after every line of dialogue, though. That's amaturish, for a writer, and Scalzi is a pretty good writer. But that's one of the first things they teach you in fiction writing, just let the dialogue flow, and throw in the he said, they said, very sparingly. That said, really liked the story, was different, and I look forward to more from this interesting, and plucky author!
When they go back to earth, Just like in the old Star Trek episodes.
Yes and how, he is a very good reader, and excellent actor.
When they were able to save one of the charactors from the past.I am being deliberatly vague here.
Good book worth the listen!
"Just the Best"
Yes this is the best new Science Fiction I have read, or listened to in years!
Brilliant and funny, good characters, loved the D.I. he was hilarious. John Scalzi is really a good writer, However, he is not on a level with the great Robert Heinlein. The reason Heinlein's prose is so elevated is because Heinlein engages in broad societal commentary and an solid under pining of moral philosophy. This is what the major difference is. Scalzi's work is mostly entertainment, with a brief pot shot thrown at Big corporations. Now allow me to sight an example, from Heinlein's Starship Troopers. I will now quote from the holy of Starship Troopers, ah-hmmm, Mr. Dubios asks Johnnie Rico "What is the moral difference between a soldier and a civilian?" Johnnie responds "The difference lies in the field of civic virtue. A soldier accepts responsibility for the safety of the body politic of which he is a member, defending it if need be, with his life, the civilian does not." There is nothing like this Old mans war. or in any other examples in Mr. Scalzi's work. I do consider him to be an up and coming writer, equal to Larry Niven, Orson Scott card, or Robert Sawyer. So though he is good, he is not quite Bob Heinlein, at least not yet.
Wonderful, Great range as an actor, and reader! Just the Best.
Galactic mercenaries from Hell!
Great Book!
"first half so so, second half good"
The second half of the book I give 4 stars the first half I give 2 stars. I find some of the knee jerk conservative diatribe not even reasonable. The character of Dana, is very two dimensional, and not the strong independent woman I would expect her to be, and an ace pilot for the earth defense at that. She seemed like a timed little woman just doing her best, which exemplifies John Ringo's typical sexist right wing nonsense. You need a bad ass like Mila Jovavich to go in there and get the job done! Great battle scenes, great descriptions, of process's and advanced machinery! That's the part that I love about John Ringo. But all that is in the second half which is as good as the first book. I am sure I will get the third.
It was fine and was similar to the first book, but all the crazy conclusions from the first half of the book, not realistic. Example: Earth is attacked by aliens and only the United States wants to defend the planet! Not the Russians, not the Chinese, not the Germans, no one but us here in America. Really?
Excellent story teller and reader, does good voice's, I give him 5 stars
Yes! In the right hands it could be spectacular, Hey give it to Michael Bay, he did a fantastic job with the Island, and Transformers. I like that chick from the medical show House, the bomb Oliva wilde! yeah she would be a great Bad ass pilot, or Milla Jovavich.
John, John............I guess your strengths out weigh your weekness'es but I can only give this a 3 star over all for story and 5 stars for excellent reading.
"Interesting, you get to see how the wealthy live"
It was interesting, but not the Master's best work, you get to see how rich people live, and view their cavalier lives, but not too much of anything else. This was a good idea, but not exploited to anywhere its true potential. Heinlein's earlier work is simply fantastic, all the stuff from the" 50's" and "60's" I would recommend whole heartedly, while I am one the biggest Heinlein fan's (He is the best Science fiction writer of the last 100 years, in my humble opinion) I think he has done better work, work that touch's people on so many levels. Its worth listing to, but don't make it your first Heinlein read or listen. Umkay!
the main charactor being a super spy, or courier as she called her self. Least interesting, let me see the Geo-politcal nonsense going on in the back ground, does it add to the story or is it dystopian, I don't know, its not quite fleshed out.
It was a mediocre performance, she acted kind of bored the whole, read and extremely whiny (think of Fran Dressher in the nanny) ha ha ha! This is not what a super spy would do, check out Aeon flux, that's a kick ass chick!
No I don't think so.
It was alright but like I say, not his best, and the narrator need's diction, and acting lessons!
"Great Story by a Master story teller!"
I have, and I love the series.
Troy rising, by John Ringo, however Larry Niven is a slightly better writer.Mr Niven can write Fantasy as well as Science fiction, he is just one of the great ones.
The emotions, and the feelings of the charactors.
Yes but it is just too long for that.
I give Mr. Niven a 97 out of 100 on this one, but I didn't like the incarnation of teela brown, but that is my only complaint. Other than that it was a wonderful journey I will love to take again, again.I didn't have a problem with the sex in the book, I thought it was appropriate, and important to the story. I also loved the intro by Larry Niven, "The ring world is unstable!"
"Wow! fantastic material, and presentation"
What a fantastic story, and the production actually did justice to Heinlein and his work! I still can't believe how good this audio book was, I have listened to 30 or so of various Sci-fi books and this one was by far the best! 5 star production.
Rod, the central protagonist, he was believable as a young man. He was resourceful, educated, and honorable. A complete masterful story, and the actors were fantastic, including Madson as the gruff, grizzled teacher, life is like that, its wonderful, and dangerous all at the same time. I wish we had teachers like this in our school system today, people might have a more moral and balanced outlook on life.
No! But he was fantastic!
This is the first one that I have truly felt that way, what an accomplishment! I have listened to 40 or so other audio books and I have to say the production values here were the very best!
Loved it, will get more by this company of actors.
