One moment Joseph Schwartz is a happily retired tailor in Chicago, 1949. The next he's a helpless stranger on Earth during the heyday of the first Galactic Empire. Earth, as he soon learns, is a backwater, just a pebble in the sky, despised by all the other 200 million planets of the Empire because its people dare to claim it's the original home of man. And Earth is poor, with great areas of radioactivity ruining much of its soil - so poor that everyone is sentenced to death at the age of 60. Joseph Schwartz is 62.

I read this as a boy along with many other books by Isaac Asimov. Now as a working adult I don’t have as much time for reading as I used to. Hearing the performance was a chance to visit this work again and enjoy it in a new way. It’s still as good as I remember.

I first read “The Deep Range” as a boy when it was originally published and have read it again since then. It’s always been one of my favorites from Arthur C. Clark. Hearing it as an audible work was another chance to revisit it. Like many classic works, this is one that I would recommend reading in print before listening to the audio.

Like every other hobbit, Bilbo Baggins likes nothing better than a quiet evening in his snug hole in the ground, dining on a sumptuous dinner in front of a fire. But when a wandering wizard captivates him with tales of the unknown, Bilbo becomes restless. Soon he joins the wizard’s band of homeless dwarves in search of giant spiders, savage wolves, and other dangers. Bilbo quickly tires of the quest for adventure and longs for the security of his familiar home. But before he can return to his life of comfort, he must face the greatest threat of all.

I only give five starts to books that I enjoyed so well that I know I’ll listen to them more than once. There’s so little time and so many books, that doesn’t happen very often.

  • The Fabric of the Cosmos: Space, Time, and the Texture of Reality

Space and time form the very fabric of the cosmos. Yet they remain among the most mysterious of concepts. Is space an entity? Why does time have a direction? Could the universe exist without space and time? Can we travel to the past?

I've been asked to review this book. Actually, I'm still working on it. It's very information rich. Brian Greene makes great use of analogy and explains complicated topics in easy language and in great detail. If you have an interest in cosmology, this is a great book and is up to date. Best taken a chapter at a time so you can absorb it and think about it before moving on.

I’m interested in astronomy and cosmology so it’s been interesting and worth it for me.

The Thank You Economy is about something big, something greater than any single revolutionary platform. It isn't some abstract concept or wacky business strategy—it's real, and every one of us is doing business in it every day, whether we choose to recognize it or not. It's the way we communicate, the way we buy and sell, the way businesses and consumers interact online and offline.

Good information on how to grow your business through social media. The author reads the book like he was presenting it to a seminar. He has no issue with frequently going “off script” from the book material to include more current information or personal notes. He includes lots of relevant examples on how to put the information to good use.

There used to be two teams in every workplace: management and labor. Now there’s a third team, the linchpins. These people invent, lead (regardless of title), connect others, make things happen, and create order out of chaos. They figure out what to do when there’s no rule book. They delight and challenge their customers and peers. They love their work, pour their best selves into it, and turn each day into a kind of art.

In this groundbreaking epic biography, Douglas Brinkley draws on never-before-published materials to examine the life and achievements of our "naturalist president." By setting aside more than 230 million acres of wild America for posterity between 1901 and 1909, Theodore Roosevelt made conservation a universal endeavor. This crusade for the American wilderness was perhaps the greatest U.S. presidential initiative between the Civil War and World War I.

On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester's Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener's hand is severed as "the dome" comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when - or if - it will go away.
