The story was extremely slow for the first 3/4 of the book, but it did start to pick up during the final 2 hours. It was not as enjoyable as I'd hoped.
I became a fan of the 'odd couple' (Royce Melbourne and Hadrian Blackwater) the instant I listened to this first book in the Riyria Revelations series. Both the main and supporting characters are all so colorful and interesting that I became lost in their world, and the narrator really brings them to life. Be aware that this story starts after Royce and Hadrian were already partners and good friends. If you prefer your story line more linear, you may want to first listen to the two book prequel series (The Riyria Chronicles) which starts at the beginning of their friendship. How ever you choose to listen, you won't be disappointed!
Gillian Flynn weaves an interesting story with an good balance between the normal and abnormal, served with a twist. This was time and a credit well spent!
This is a beautifully written story of choices and consequences. It does not gloss over difficult situations, and left me pondering what I would have done in the same circumstance. A truly excellent book!
I listened to the first half, but could not finish the rest. The story, and the characters were uninteresting. My advice is to save your credit!
Excellent story with just the right balance of tragedy and triumph. I highly recommend!
I had not heard of this book until my book club selected it as our next read. I WISH that I had bothered to listen to the sample before purchasing. I found the the narrator's sorority/valley girl voice to be extremely distracting and annoying. So annoying that I couldn't wait for it to be over. I will not bother listening to the last two books.
The story was okay and the writing was fine but the story lacked depth. I was not drawn in and didn't care about the characters. On a positive note, the sex scenes were both spicy and tastefulI. However, in the end I could not relate to the the main character (a 21 year old virgin) and would not recommend for mature women (Try the Outlander series instead).
In the end I didn't get what all of the hype is about. Zane blazed this trail a LONG time ago with Addicted.
I took a chance on Life of Pi based on the ratings, however I am among the few who did not enjoy the story. Some parts were interesting (Pi's multiple religions and the strange island) and I was relieved he was saved, but overall the ending fell flat.
I took a chance and purchased The Gunslinger after listening to 11-22-63 and Under the Dome (both excellent!). I was not drawn into the story line or the characters of The Gunslinger. The writing is very good, but the story was just never grabbed me. I listened to about 80% of the story but was so bored I just gave up without making it to the end.
I was not sure what to expect, from a story told from the perspective of a dog, but was pleasantly surprised. The storyline was engaging and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Dog lovers will be particularly amused, but it is a great read for anyone.
