Max Jones, a practical, hard-working young man, found his escape in his beloved astronomy books. When reality comes crashing in and his troubled home life forces him out on the road, Max finds himself adrift in a downtrodden land - until an unexpected, ultimate adventure carries him away as a stowaway aboard an intergalactic spaceship.

Jeanene says: "A typical Heinlein Juvenile"
    "Pleasantly surprised"

This one was a great read! It didn't follow the typical boy is an idiot, boy discovers he has amazing powers, boy winds up winning the girl, the fame and the world, bla, bla, bla... that so many scifi/fantasy stories do. For an older book, it seemed up to date enough to me to hold my interest. In fact, I found myself impressed that Heinlein wrote such a contemporary story so long ago. I enjoyed it very much and will look into more Heinlein books.

Mackenzie Allen Philips' youngest daughter, Missy, has been abducted during a family vacation and evidence that she may have been brutally murdered is found in an abandoned shack deep in the Oregon wilderness. Four years later in the midst of his Great Sadness, Mack receives a suspicious note, apparently from God, inviting him back to that shack for a weekend. Against his better judgment he arrives at the shack on a wintry afternoon and walks back into his darkest nightmare.

From beginning to end this one was a fantastic story! It is interesting, moving, intriguing and thought provoking. And certainly story which is quite relevant for today’s times, especially if you have kids. I found it a fantastic read which drew me closer to God while it touched my heart and made me think. It will give you strong reassurances about God's love for you, how He relates to us His children, who the Holy Spirit is, why Jesus had to die for you and ultimately what God's purpose for you is. It is a fast paced, entertaining read that will be totally worth your time. I absolutely loved it and will listen to it again again!

It's America in 1962. Slavery is legal once again. The few Jews who still survive hide under assumed names. In San Francisco, the I Ching is as common as the Yellow Pages. It's all because, some 20 years earlier, the United States lost a war - and is now occupied jointly by Nazi Germany and Japan.

Julie W. Capell says: "Meta before meta was cool"
"A great idea, but what happened to the story????"
    Overall

The idea of a post WWII world where the US lost the war was so intriguing that I thought I just had to give this one a listen.... I nearly shut it off several times! I can deal with the silly accents any reader tries in performing a reading, if the story is good. This one fell far short of "good". It was the kind of story that just starts becoming rich and interesting then dries out. Tries again at interesting then dies out again. Finally leaving you at the end of the book wondering why you wasted your time with it at all. All along the way I kept wondering where the story was going only to realize at the end it had no destination, conclusion or even a cogent thought. It was a dismal entertainment failure and the only thought it provoked was should I continue this audio torture or shut it off and count it a loss. I chose the torture! Do yourself a favor, don't choose torture....

In the midst of the Go-Go '90s, the culture of greed infused the MIT campus. A small blackjack club sprang up, dedicated to counting cards and beating the house at major casinos around the country. The Club grew slowly at first, but by the late 1990s, the right people had come up with the right system to take some of the world's most sophisticated casinos for all they were worth.

Julie says: "Good Book.. HORRIBLE Narrator"
"Feel like a trip to the casino???? Don't bother!!"
    Overall

I enjoyed the book. It was a fast read and kept my interest well. Not quite as good as the movie. The ending was different and I thought the movie tied things up better and made it more exciting. If this is truly a factual story, it has killed my desire to try my luck at the cassino. Not all together a bad thing!
