  • Against the Sun

    • UNABRIDGED (12 hrs and 46 mins)
    • By Kat Martin
    • Narrated By Jack Garrett
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

It's not in bodyguard Jake Cantrell's job description to share his suspicions with his assignments. Beautiful executive Sage Dumont may be in charge, but Jake's not on her payroll. As a former special forces marine, Jake trusts his gut, and it's telling him there's something off about a shipment arriving at Marine Drilling International. His instinct is aroused … in more ways than one. A savvy businesswoman, Sage knows better than to take some hired gun's "hunch" as gospel.

Amazon Customer says: "Hot new series!!!"
"Average story WRONG artist to read it"
What did you like best about Against the Sun? What did you like least?

i was somewhat disappointed with the story. I have come to expect wee above average from Kat Martin. This was predictable, and the characters were a bit flat.

How could the performance have been better?

Jack Garrett has a nice voice, but I never want to hear him perform a romance novel again. Bleh!

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

  • The Haunting of Hill House

    • UNABRIDGED (7 hrs and 31 mins)
    • By Shirley Jackson
    • Narrated By Bernadette Dunne
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Four seekers have come to the ugly, abandoned old mansion: Dr. Montague, an occult scholar looking for solid evidence of the psychic phenomenon called haunting; Theodora, his lovely and lighthearted assistant; Eleanor, a lonely, homeless girl well acquainted with poltergeists; and Luke, the adventurous future heir of Hill House.

Mark says: "Superb Reading of Horror Classic"
    "Insane babble start to finish"
What would have made The Haunting of Hill House better?

This book would have been better off never having been written.

Would you ever listen to anything by Shirley Jackson again?

I will NEVER listen to or read anything by Shirley Jackson again.

    Which scene was your favorite?

There weren't any scenes worthy of being favorite.

What character would you cut from The Haunting of Hill House?

Arthur was a complete waste of wordage.Although, since the whole book was a waste of words, he was just superfluous.

    Any additional comments?

They should have called this book Ramblings of an insane mind. And by that, I don't mean a character, I mean the author. The main character is more than a little unstable, and her ramblings were fairly focused, but not on anything relating to the plot. The dialog between the characters had the potential to be cute, but didn't live up to that potential. It came off as unrealistic to the point of just being ridiculous.

  • Birthright

    • UNABRIDGED (16 hrs)
    • By Nora Roberts
    • Narrated By Bernadette Quigley
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

On a hot July afternoon, a worker at an Antietam Creek construction site drives the blade of his backhoe into a layer of soil - and strikes a 5,000-year-old human skull. The discovery draws plenty of attention and a lot of controversy. It also changes the life of one woman in ways she never expected.

Krista says: "Nora must be mad"
"Nora is Always terrific. Bernadette - not so much"
Is there anything you would change about this book?

The narrator. She couldn't keep the voices straight. Most the time I couldn't tell who was talking. She made the main female character sound male more often than not, and the main male character had the voice of a goofy beach bum.

What did you like best about this story?

Nora Roberts books are always fun, exciting, entertaining and thrilling. This book did not disappoint.

Would you be willing to try another one of Bernadette Quigley’s performances?

Was Birthright worth the listening time?

Barely worth listening to. I would have preferred to read it.

  • A Witch's Handbook of Kisses and Curses: Half Moon Hollow, Book 2

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 59 mins)
    • By Molly Harper
    • Narrated By Amanda Ronconi
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Nola Leary would have been content to stay in Kilcairy, Ireland, healing villagers at her family’s clinic with a mix of magic and modern medicine. But a series of ill-timed omens and a deathbed promise to her grandmother have sent her on a quest to Half-Moon Hollow, Kentucky, to secure her family’s magical potency for the next generation. Her supernatural task? To unearth four artifacts hidden by her grandfather before a rival magical family beats her to it. Complication One: The artifacts are lost somewhere in vampire Jane Jameson’s occult bookshop. Complication Two: Her new neighbor, Jed Trudeau, keeps turning up half-naked at the strangest times....

Diana Turmenne says: "One of the best spin offs I have read!"
"Molly Harper has done it again!"
What made the experience of listening to A Witch's Handbook of Kisses and Curses the most enjoyable?

I just love MH's witty and sarcastic sense of humor. This book was just as much fun as her other books.

What about Amanda Ronconi’s performance did you like?

I was somewhat disappointed in Amanda's performance this time, only because the accent was inconsistent and well, bad. Amanda has an excellent track record with MH's books so I was really surprised to be so distracted by the accent in this one.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

MH's style always makes me laugh.

  • Nightshade: Nightshade Series, Book 1

    • UNABRIDGED (9 hrs and 20 mins)
    • By Michelle Rowen
    • Narrated By Cynthia Holloway
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Desire is in the blood... Jillian Conrad never believed in vampires. But she's just become a living, breathing weapon against them. Attacked by a desperate scientist, she is injected with a serum that was supposed to act as a deadly poison to vampires. And when the scientist is gunned down in front of her, his secrets die with him. Declan Reyes is only half-vampire, but he hates them with all his heart. He knows that the poison in Jillian's veins could finally destroy the undead kingdom.

    Amazon Customer says: "Good Listen"
    "I wish I'd read it."
If you could sum up Nightshade in three words, what would they be?

New - The idea isn't one I've seen or heard before.
Unpredictable - The story rarely went the way I expected. It was great.
Cliff hanger - Definitely left me ready for the second book.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Nightshade?

The deflowering of Declan was quite memorable.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

You could clearly hear the moods of the characters, but couldn't tell which character was speaking. She used several voices interchangeably for all the characters.
