I listened to this book after Tilt-A-Whirl. Where TAW was written in a Carl Hyancinth style with characters that were entertaining this book tried to be more "realistic" . The result was for me the typical formula thriller. The characters were stereotypical, the dialog was atrocious, the story moved slowly. While I would recommend TAW to anyone who is a fan of Christopher Moore, Carl Hyacinth, this one should be left on the shelf (virtual shelf)
My favorite character(s) were Ed and Sally. I like Ed's droll attitude and Sally's attitude and smart aleckness
He seemed to capture the attitude of the characters. BUT learn that you pronounce Viola in this context as "WaLa" not "Viola" :-)
BIll was the most memorable
Characters were well drawn and the story translates from just pure science fantasy/fiction
Yes and no. I don't like all Science Fantasy but I will read other books by Cline as they come out
He doesn't foreshadow too much but skips between real and fantasy lives
Not much. He could differentiate between male and female characters and his voice inflection was good. I have read other book where he has narrated (Agent to the Stars and Red Shirts) and liked his narration
Yes, it was engaging, however, I agree with other reviewers that it moves slowly
Other Grisham books
Worth the listen but not as good as his classics. I would rate it actually about a 3.5
I have read the first two previous Lee Child books with Reacher as the main character and this one is worse for both the story and the narration. First of all the story is good, but again the characters interact stupidly. Reacher acts like he's never seen modern conveniences. He may have been in the Military but they are not sheltered from reality. And the way he interacts with Jody is stilted and dopey.
Then there is the narration. There are so many mispronunciations that I have to wonder about the narration and the editing. He is also terrible at female voices. I'm sometimes not sure that the inane dialog is due to as much to the narration as the writing.
I would give this book a mild buy recommendation because the story is good.
I read Buried Secrets and liked it so I thought I'd listen to this one. I like Scott Brick so I figured it was probably good. WRONG. The biggest problem is that every action is drawn out, the characters are predictable, and I can't wait to finish it. The only reason I haven't ditched it is because I try to always read what I buy. I know what happens in the end and that will make it worse. The dialog is horrible and I don't even find myself rooting for the main character.
Save your credits on this one. Try Buried Secrets or another book. This one is a stinker
I was enjoying this book up until the last hour. I don't understand how the main Justice Dept. character can be so stupid - it just doesn't make sense. I agree with the reviewer that says the government agents look bumbling - too much so. The narration is good, and I guess I would give this a passing recommendation - barely.
This is a great story, Khaled Hosseini has a tremendous capacity to tell a story that captivates the listener. The content is disturbing, but the writing is so good as is the story that it grips you. I agree with some of the reviewers that the narrator is monotone, but to me that adds tenor to the book her narration fits the story. I am not quite finished listening, but I would highly recommend this book, especially if you like The Kite Runner
This is a great book. I could not wait to get in the car and listen. The narration is good and the story is ironic, funny and I found myself laughing out loud at it. I describe this book to friends as a funny horror science fantasy book.
I recommend this audiobook to everyone.
While the dialog (especially male-female) is better written than most of the books I've read lately, I found it hard to believe that a supposedly seasoned, intelligent person would make some of the poor choices he made.
If you like the Harry Bosch style loner character though, you will enjoy this book.
