"Good collection of short stories"
This book while very short is still very good. Great characters and great descriptions and quips from the characters but it seems played out. I feel Drown and Brief Wonderous Life of Oscar Wao were better but i still listened to this straight through. Would rather of had the silk voiced Jonathan Davis read it also but Diaz is still a good narrator. What I would like is for DIaz to write a sci fi book with Dominicans on the Moon or Mars. Some new settings and characters would be great.
""The Most Interesting Man in the World""
A glimpse into a life where the African savannah is your front yard and traffic is the least of your worries. This book is a story of a life completly different then one many experience. The elephants while weaved through the story are more of a moral bellweather then a scientific experiment. The interaction with the Zulu's, poachers, and hired help, along with the elephants give this book a deep look into modern Africa and into our own thinking. It also makes you want to sell everything and go work on a reserve in Africa where cobras and electric fences are on your mind not your job and homelife.
"Drout Does it Again! Amazing!"
Michael Drout is my personal favorite in the Modern Scholar series. Everything he does is fun and he usually speaks in some crazy language that makes your mouth gap in awe. If interested at all in the Vikings get it. Well worth the credit.
"Good, Good, Awesome, Can't finish it"
While I don't blame the author for U.S. Grant's boring presidency I do blame him for telling it in such a yawnworthy way. While in depth about the presidency it felt like an ice pick going into my ocular socket. Great early life through presidential election boring afterwords though. Narrator was good but editing was horrible......maybe audible should have a editing rating i have heard some crazy things on some audiobooks.
"Very atriculate and emotional novel of the Iraqwar"
The Yellow Birds, while very emotional and well written has me wondering about the moral message related in this book. Yellow Birds does not, I believe, give you insight into the war or in the stateside portion of it anymore than the movie Apocalypse Now gives a view of Vietnam. While it is short i think it is still worth the credit. I believe the book The Good Soldiers was much better and it is an actual account of the Iraq war.
"Excellent I am now a Micheal Drout fan"
Great professor who really gets into his lectures. Micheal Drout is fantastic and I will be getting more of his work.
"Training to kill never sounded so fun"
Good book goes into the formation of Delta force and the selection process. Robertson Dean has a low almost Andre the Giant quality of his voice and is always good for military books. Also doing practice door breaches with actual people in to room, with live rounds can only be described in one way.
"Fix Bayonets! Fix Bayonets! Fix Bayonets!"
Warning this audiobook may make driving unsafe. I was listening to this awesome storyteller while driving my work truck and blew a stop sign at 60 MPH luckily no cars where there. This book is so good it should have a warning.
"Oliver Sacks puts poetry into psychology"
I would recommend this book to my friends because it is an amazing voyage you are taken on through the professional eyes of Oliver Sacks. His descriptions are poetic and allow you to understand that disease is not uniform especially anything that effects the brain.
I loved the history of each patient and how the past of each person interacts with the L-DOPA given to each patient. Truly amazing in its artistic quality.
Oliver Sacks is quirky and his introduction is almost parallel to Robin Williams in the movie version of the book. Jonathan Davis is truly amazing in his connection to the subject. With Jonathan Davis as a narrator to some of the most amazing and saddening events in peoples lives there is a pathos that is undeniable and will tug at you in the most elemental or human ways.
When one of the patients started to have hallucinations of a visitor to her room. She would start to get prepared for company and await her late night gentleman caller. It is amazing to hear just what human beings are capable of.
Amazing! Read the book. Watch the movie. Watch the documentary. Rethink what makes you...you.
