I got bored with this book a few hours in so I cannot fairly give it a rating. For the price however, is it is OK and perhaps if I had not recently splurged on many other new Lisa Gardners and had a full Playlist I would have stayed longer. I would not waste a credit on it but i won't return it unless i give it another chance. ... if you are out of credits and need a cheaper book to kill time, it may be worth the 7 bucks. if I finish it someday, I'll update this rating.

this is the best gritty HF novels I've read since George rr. I actually like it better. i estimate I've read/listened to >400 since then. It has everything in fantasy genre you could ask for (literally everything along with things you'd never know to wish for) in a gritty adult presentation. Simon Vance NAILS this performance. It's definitely not your 'coming of age hero saves the day' story.. I'm almost finished with the be 2nd book and i feel duty bound to help my fellow fantasy genre junkies fine this book. I've yet to determine who I'm rooting for.... who is good and who is not, let alone right and wrong. The characters are not predictable not erratic, They're smart and secretive and make good decisions.. often I thought I had figured out the 'good guys and the bad guys' in book 1 only to be completely suprised later.... These books are never predictable. There has never been a dull minute. I have felt a strong affection or loathing for main characters from the beginning and it only grows or changes throughout. This book keeps you guessing and nothing is off limits. From dragons, fae, cults of demon worshipping witches and monsters and an amazing fully developed world where nothing is off limits... plus political upheaval and power struggles. this book is totally adult, totally intriguing and gritty as they come. generally I only rate books because I read /listen to do many I forget which series I want to continue so I rate the books I can finish and be return the ones i can't get thru. This book is similar (in a way... maybe grittiness and originality) to Alex Marshalls A Crown for Cold Silver series. I think I may like this better even than Brandon Sanderson Way of Kings series.... and those above are my top favorites for the last decade..... So, if you like gritty high fantasy, you can't do better than this!! I usually listen to most books at higher speed because I'm ADD and get bored easily but I finished this at normal speed. I'm totally in love with this author and can't wait for future books. I'd even go out of genre to follow him and that's rare for me. get this book! you will be so very glad you did!

This world 'the star' and it's inhabitants are like nothing you'll experience anywhere else. This author is whip smart and witty. Every chapter and every book you'll fall more deeply in love. I want more than these 3 books so bad it hurts. Please give us more Alex! Please give us more Alex, Audible. PLEASE......

A thousand years ago, the Navigator crossed the great deep in ships lit with 16 stones touched by Oum'ilah, the God of Gods. Over time the stones were scattered, and a prophecy arose declaring that a "child of no man" would gather them again, obtain immortality, and reign forever as god and king of Candelarr. Two religious groups have sprung up around the prophecy, each with its own champion.

I listened at 1.25 speed because that seemed more like normal speech speed to me and I'm a bit ADD. ... I think the narrator was dragging the length out by reading a bit slow or the editor slowed the tape.... however this narrator is really really talented and nice to listen to. he does many character voices well and he has a very pleasant voice. I probably could have enjoyed it at regular speed once I was onto the book (so 3 minutes in, lol). Why haven't I heard of this narrator before? ???? he's got a GREAT voice!!! Very talented narrator and author.

This is a bit of a coming of age story while still remaining very original. It follows 2 boys on different sides of an upcoming war until they come together. This book has action, love, danger and introduces us to the mysterious fae. This book would be OK for YA but it does not feel like YA or immature, however no sex, rape or really gory scenes. it's not missing action at all. You instantly love these emotionally mature characters and the world they live in. I did not struggle even once to stay engaged, from the very beginning all the way through. This author is a true storyteller so works and character building are developed and is an absolute treat to explore.
I have >900 audio books, 75% fantasy however probably 40% are unfinished because I am not disciplined enough to stick with books that can't grab my attention right away. .....

In a near-deserted coastal village, odd things are happening. Strangers are asking questions about the town's recluse. A local hunter discovers naked footprints in the snow. The stray dog population has ceased to exist. And with winter's most powerful weapon bearing down, things are about to become much, much worse. A werewolf book. Not a romance. Not at all.

Even villains need a hero. Gerard lost his birthright in his small island kingdom when he married the court minstrel. He fled to the only place that offered protection from his father and his vengeful local deity - the service of the High Priestess. Unfortunately, his superior officer, Silveo, takes an instant disliking to Gerard. Silveo has a reputation for cruelty, cunning, and a biting wit. He's a minority species, and rumors claim that he was once an assassin, who clawed his way to power from a childhood of poverty and abuse.

I started listening to this as a free podiocast series and after only 2/5 books. .... i decided the author, story and narrators are so great, they deserved the use of my credit just so I could give this book 5 stars here. Definitely get this book if u like gritty fantasy. this is for adults and is a bit graphic, although less than George RR, IMHO, so I'm surprised she lost ratings for it.... I doubt there could b any other reason not to give this book 5 stars. I was giving up on this genre for lack of new good material. thanks for breathing life into my lost love of fantasy Abigail! keep it up!
