At least one-third of the people we know are introverts. They are the ones who prefer listening to speaking, reading to partying; who innovate and create but dislike self-promotion; who favor working on their own over brainstorming in teams. Although they are often labeled "quiet," it is to introverts that we owe many of the great contributions to society--from van Gogh’s sunflowers to the invention of the personal computer.

This, the first in the splendid series of Jack Aubrey novels, establishes the friendship between Captain Aubrey, Royal Navy, and Stephen Maturin, ship's surgeon and intelligence agent, against the thrilling backdrop of the Napoleonic wars. Details of life aboard a man-of-war in Nelson's navy are faultlessly rendered: the conversational idiom of the officers in the ward room and the men on the lower deck, the food, the floggings, the mysteries of the wind and the rigging, and the road of broadsides as the great ships close in battle.

It is said that the right man in the right place at the right time can mean the difference between victory and defeat. This is the dramatic story of 68 soldiers in the US Army's Second Ranger Battalion, Company D - "Dog Company" - who made that difference, time and again. America had many heroes in World War II; however, few can say that, but for them, the course of the war would have been very different. The right men, the right place, the right time - Dog Company.

The ideas are old, recycled and the author came off as egocentric. This book is not really about business, it just uses business as the platform to speak about how lifelong learning is a path to being (important, happy, content, self assured)... not sure which adjective to use.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Seabiscuit was a runaway success, and Hillenbrand’s done it again with another true-life account about beating unbelievable odds. On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared.....

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s.

At 6:00 a.m. on the morning of October 3, 2009, Combat Outpost Keating was viciously attacked by Taliban insurgents. The 53 U.S. troops, having been stationed at the bottom of three steep mountains, were severely outmanned by nearly 400 Taliban fighters. Though the Americans ultimately prevailed, their casualties made it one of the war's deadliest battles for U.S. forces. And after more than three years in that dangerous and vulnerable valley a mere 14 miles from the Pakistan border, the U.S. abandoned and bombed the camp.

I was in Afghanistan from 06-08. The culture of the Army is "I will fight were I am told to fight, and I will win where I fight" and Afghanistan tested that culture and expounded on why it doesn’t always benefit the Soldiers.

I'm not sure if someone who wasn't there would understand some of the underlying themes in this book. If you are listening to the book for the battles or for an understanding of how we fought the war, this is a pretty good account. However, if you experienced the war, it will just validate how under manned and under resourced we were. I personally got sick to my stomach listening to this book but it was a rewarding experience at the end.

Written by cancer physician, researcher, and award-winning science writer Siddhartha Mukherjee, The Emperor of All Maladies is a stunning combination of medical history, cutting-edge science, and narrative journalism that transforms our understanding of cancer and much of the world around us. Mukherjee examines cancer with a cellular biologist's precision, a novelist's richness of detail, a historian's range, and a biographer's passion.

I typically don't enjoy history books or data driven books. I listened to it because my wife started reading the book and it was on sale for like 3.95. With that said it is an impressive account of cancer and I walk away impressed with the author.

I would recommed this book to anyone who likes history books, not just medical or scientific novels.

Interesting philosophy on wealth. He makes the assumption that your money goals should be to have large enough income generating assests that can earn you enough money to live confortably. He choose real estate as a platform to meet that endstate.

Before reading the book, I just knew I was supposed to make my money work for me so I invested in stocks and mutual funds. After reading the book, it changed my think to start researching oppurtunities for me to diversify into.
