Here's the thing. I got this book on sale (thank goodness) and I am still up in the air about it. There were concepts/ideas that seemed interesting, but the descriptions were often long and drawn out and still left me scratching my head (huh?) wondering what was going on.
Perhaps, it's that this is the first in the series and there's a lot of world building to trudge through. I had to rewind/back up and relisten to parts often to try to make sense of "the Grey".
Then there is the matter of the narrator. She wasn't horrible, but it wasn't great. It was hard to listen to sometimes as all I could hear was her lisp( except, oddly, when she did an Irish accent.) It's like when you are watching a movie in the theater and notice a small tear or imperfection in the screen somewhere; and then for the rest of the movie you just keep noticing it and it grates on your nerves, taking away from the overall enjoyment of the movie. Yeah, it was kind of like that.
I am NOT saying to stay away from this author/series. There were things I found compelling and interesting (both concept/story wise and character wise). I would, however, recommend getting it from a library though. Be sure you like it before you spend your money on it. If I had wasted 2 credits on this, I would have been irate. However, for just under $5... it was worth trying a new author/series.
If they switch out narrators or if other books in the series go on sale for under $5 again, I might pick them up... otherwise, save your credits.
This is a review of FOR A FEW DEMONS MORE, narrated by Marguerite Gavin --- just to clear that up, as some of the reviews seem to be for the next book in which there is a different narrator.
Any way... This wasn't my favorite story of the series, and I actually found the audio difficult to follow part of the time as so much was going on. (I switched over to a print version and reread what I had already listened to in order to be sure I didn't miss anything.)
Having said that, I truly enjoy Marguerite Gavin's narration, as always. There was plenty of humor and one scene in particular --- the wedding chapter--- that was BRILLIANT! That scene alone is worth the price of the book.
My problem isn't with the audio version of the book, but rather with the writing. To avoid major spoilers, I shall simply say that something important happens in this book that should have been emotional on some level and it just wasn't. It was a complete non-event. I will keep reading the series. Hopefully this and some other lose ends will eventually be tied up, otherwise it just seems a bit sloppy. Since finishing the book, I have read an explanation from the author as to her intent in writing "it" that way, but I have to say that I don't think she accomplished her goal. I understand what she was going for, but I think she missed the mark.
Overall, though... this series is pretty good and well worth a listen/read. I do look forward to the next installments.
I am NOT a huge fan of either Romances or Time Travel, but I love a deal and picked this audio book up when it was on sale for a greatly reduced price. I AM a huge fan of the urban fantasy/paranormal genre and frequent Charlaine Harris' website. She gave this book a good review and Diana Gabaldon and this series have legions of fans on that site. So, why not give it a try --- worst that could happen, I waste $5.
What I discovered was that I was soon enthralled by the tale and by the WONDERFUL narration of Davina Porter. This is perhaps the best narration I have ever heard, in fact. Ms. Porter's intonation and accents are enthralling and actually enhance the story, itself. I can't wait for the next installment.
For lovers of Historical Romances, this is a MUST HAVE! And if you have already read & enjoyed the series, you should still check out the audio version. Davina Porter's narration really brings the story to life. She is adept at giving a voice to both male and female characters, whether they are English or Scottish, etc... In fact, I found myself thinking with a Scottish lilt/brogue for days after finishing this book.
