Building upon this critical work in Good Calories, Bad Calories and presenting fresh evidence for his claim, Taubes now revisits the urgent question of what’s making us fat—and how we can change—in this exciting new book. Persuasive, straightforward, and practical, Why We Get Fat makes Taubes’s crucial argument newly accessible to a wider audience.

Igor says: "Are you looking for an attachement for the book?"
    "Great book, written and read"
    Overall

I just finished this book after just a few days, and since I started it I've changed to a low-carb diet. In just 4 days, I've lost about 5 pounds! This book isn't a diet book per se, but it does give you reasons on why you should change your diet to be more healthy. Before reading this, I honestly didn't know that the bread and pastries I so loved were what gave me my gut. Now I know and I've cut them out of my diet, and I'm already feeling MUCH better! Read it. Believe it. Follow it.

War seethed across the planet. Machines soared through the air, churned through the seas, crawled across the surface, pushing ever forward, carrying death. Earth was engaged in titanic struggle. Germany, Russia, France, China, Japan: the maps were changing day by day. The hostilities spread in ever-widening ripples of destruction: Britain, Italy, Africa...the fate of the world hung in the balance. Then the real enemy came.

    W says: "Awesome"
"Turtledove is hit or miss...this one's a miss"
    Overall

I have really enjoyed some of Turtledove's other books, but this one was just so-so. I really didn't care about any of the characters and the plot was kind of predictable. Also, it's WAY too drawn-out, even for Turtledove.

I'll admit it, I didn't even finish the whole book. By the middle of part 4, I just couldn't listen any more. Normally, I'd soldier through and finish it just to finish, but I couldn't even do that.

Here is the novel that will be forever considered a triumph of the imagination. Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Maud'dib. He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family and would bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream.

    Joshua says: "Wonderful production!"
    "Well-read, VERY well written"
    Overall

I really enjoyed this book, I read it pretty fast compared to some of the earlier books I read here. This was my first exposure to Herbert and Dune, but I had heard of it when I was younger. I've now got all of the original books and will listen to them soon.

One thing that I did not like in this version is that in some parts, the characters were read by different actors, but at times they were all read by the narrator. This was mildly confusing until I got used to it. The actors for each voice were good and they helped a lot more than a single narrator could.

Overall, an enjoyable time reading it, but don't read this if you don't want to get into the whole series!

The story of Alec Leamas - a 50-year-old professional secret agent who has grown stale in espionage, who longs to "come in from the cold" - and how he undertakes one last assignment before that hoped-for retirement.

Michael Phelan says: "The Reader who Went Out in the Cold"
    "Good story, great narration"
    Overall

I really enjoyed this book. It actually got me back into listening to books after taking a break. It was well-narrated and the narrator did a great job of keeping me interested and also in keeping the characters separated.

A good book about spies back in the bad old days, and my one complaint about any historical fiction book is that I don't know how much money they're talking about! It threw up some curves and I didn't see the ending coming until right before it happened. A very well written book and now I'm going to read even more from le Carre.

Academy Award nominee Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction) rocks this mock bedtime story, capturing a hilarious range of emotions as the voice of a father struggling to get his child to sleep. Go the F**k to Sleep is a bedtime book for parents who live in the real world, where a few snoozing kitties and cutesy rhymes don’t always send a toddler sailing blissfully off to dreamland.

A good storybook for parents, but I can't imagine actually reading it to my daughter. A good way to get some laughs and kill a breaktime.

Join the Army and See the Universe. That is the motto of The Third Space War, also known as The First Interstellar War, but most commonly as The Bug War. In one of Robert Heinlein's most controversial best sellers, a recruit of the future goes through the toughest boot camp in the universe - and into battle with the Terrain Mobile Infantry against mankind's most alarming enemy.

    Michael says: "Well Aged Heinlein"
"Much better than I was expecting"
    Overall

I saw the movie, enjoyed it as a fun movie, but the book is SO much better. It's not just an action movie, it's so much more. I finished this book in about 3 days, much faster than my average 2 weeks per a book this length. It was a great story and the narrator did a great job of keeping it going and keeping my attention. I will admit that if you aren't ready for some philosophical or political discussions, you might get lost during some of the flashbacks to History and Moral Philosophy classes. But they're very well written and narrated.

A great choice, and now I'm gonna go find more Heinlein to read, and I hope it's narrated by James.

Dan Davis, an electronics engineer, had finally made the invention of a lifetime: a household robot that could do almost anything. Wild success was within reach, but then Dan's life was ruined. In a plot to steal his business, his greedy partner and greedier fiancée tricked him into taking the "long sleep": suspended animation for 30 years.

    K. Lange says: "One of Heinlein's Best"
"Great book, now I need to read more Heinlein"
    Overall

A great book. Fun story, likable characters, and really makes you think about it. I have really enjoyed sci-fi movies and TV, but not books so much. This was a great choice (thanks for the recommendation, Dad) and now I'm going to start reading more.

  • Anna Karenina

It tells of the love affair between Anna and Count Vronsky. Tragedy unfolds as Anna rejects her passionless marriage and must endure the hypocrisies of society. Set against the backdrop of nineteenth-century Russia, faith is challenged, bonds are broken, love dies and is reborn.

    Californian says: "Very Pleased"
    "Very well read"
    Overall

I had always wanted to read Anna Karenina, but was put off by the length. This audio book was the perfect answer. The narrator was very good and she really helped me keep the characters straight, the action moving, and the "pages" turning.

One thing that would be nice would be to have the individual chapters actually bookmarked instead of each "chapter" being about 2 hours with 20 or so chapters included.

Atlantis lies between Europe and the East Coast of Terranova. For many years, this land of opportunity lured dreamers from around the globe with its natural resources, offering a new beginning for those willing to brave the wonders of the unexplored land.

    Bruce says: "Fun"
    "Good book, great narration"
    Overall

I enjoyed the book, not the best, but very good. The narrator really helped keep the book alive with his voice and cadence. This book is actually 3 shorter books, the 2nd being my least favorite. My only complaint was that just as I was getting into the original characters, the story was finished and I had to get to know new ones.

I don't think I'll read the next books in this series, but this was a good buy.

The system was simple. Everyone understood it. Books were for burning, along with the houses in which they were hidden. Guy Montag was a fireman whose job it was to start fires, and he enjoyed his job. He had been a fireman for 10 years, and never questioned the pleasure of the midnight runs, nor the joy of watching pages consumed by flames. He never questioned anything, until he met a 17-year-old girl who told him of a past when people were not afraid, and a professor who told him of a future in which people could think. Guy Montag suddenly realized what he had to do.

    Casey says: "Still Relevant"
    "Great story, good narration"
    Overall

The story is classic, nothing more to say there. The narrator took just a bit to get used to. I wasn't crazy about his voice at first, but after the first 30 minutes or so, I really got to appreciate it how well he brought the story to life. You can't go wrong with this pick.
