A remarkably rare black orchid at a flower show lures Nero Wolfe from his comfortable brownstone. But before the detective and his sidekick, Archie Goodwin, can stop and smell the roses, a diabolically daring murder puts a blight on the proceedings. The murderer to be weeded out is definitely not a garden-variety killer.

Tensions are rising in the Middle East. Iran’s president vows to annihilate the United States and Israel. Israel’s prime minister says someone must hit Iran’s nuclear sites “before it’s too late.” The American president warns against a preemptive strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities and says negotiations are the key to finding peace. And amid it all, rumors are swirling throughout the region of a mysterious religious cleric claiming to be the Islamic messiah.

The author knows how to write and does a great job on the character development. The narrator also does a very good job. My issues are with the plot and ending (or lack thereof). This novel mixes in the supernatural, which provides for all sorts of "leaps of logic". The protagonist's successes are not due to his acts, insights, or intellect; but rather due to supernatural revelations. Further nothing ends in this book; you have to read the sequel I guess, which I'm not going to. I think the author focused too much on preaching his religious views, and the storyline came in second. Now if you're looking for a Christian Triller then you will probably like this book.

Rarely do I ever not finish a book, but I just couldn't take this one. A one-sided rant. No balance or context. The conclusions drawn are bizarre. A very anti-American leftist bent. Not even American missionaries are spared damnation by this author.

As a lovely weekend approaches on the Yale campus it appears that a number of students - including the sons of both the secretary of the army and newest Supreme Court justice - may have gone missing. Kidnapping? Terrorism? The authorities aren't sure. But the high-profile disappearances draw the attention of the CIA and the FBI's vaunted Hostage Rescue Team.

I must agree, a soap opera, thank goodness for fast forward. The protagonist(s)did nothing (little) that altered the outcome. flawed dependent whiny protagonists are not my cup of tea. All they did was understand what the bad guys motives were before anyone else. Very good concept and plot, if cut back on the whining, and worked on the ending some, it could have been a very good story.
