In Magic's Pawn, an ancient age in the history of Valdemar comes to life - an age when the kingdom was ravaged by the ungoverned fury of bandit warlords, ferocious ice dragons, and the wild magic of wizards. A new addition to Lackey's Valdemar kingdom - and her most powerful series to date!

Where does Magic's Pawn rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Mediocre reading with poor production. The narrator missed punctuation and read right through commas, periods, new paragraphs and scene changes. Poor reader or poor production?

Who was your favorite character and why?

Vanyel Ashkevron because we get to see him grow from an abused and difficult teen into a selfless hero.

What aspect of Gregory St. John’s performance would you have changed?

This needed better attention to details like correct pronunciation of character names and places. I wish St. John had been mindful of scene changes by taking a breath and leaving a little empty air space as a clue. I know the book has spaces between scenes for this purpose.I would have liked it better if he hadn't given every woman and teen character a whine.

    Any additional comments?

I have waited a long time for an audio production of this series and am disappointed that it wasn't given the attention it deserved. I suggest you read the book first and let the characters become real to you. Mercades Lackey's writing is better than production makes it sound.

High Magic has been lost to Valdemar centuries ago when the last Herald-Mage gave his life to save the kingdom from destruction by dark sorceries. Yet now the realm is at risk again. And Elspeth, Herald and heir to the throne, must take up the challenge, abandoning her home to find a mentor who can awaken her untrained mage abilities. But others, too, are being caught up in a war against sorcerous evil.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

What a shame. It was like no one involved in the production really cared about the quality of the product. The Mage Winds books need to be redone by someone who has actually read and enjoyed the entire series, someone who could make the listener believe that the story was worth listening to.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Because he appears in many of the books Skif has long been one of my favorite Lackey characters. Elspeth is really the lead in this one, and Darkwind is the appropriate compliment for her. Readers new to Valdemar should start with The Arrows Series (Arrows of the Queen, Arrows Flight, and Arrows Fall), plus By The Sword, before starting this first book of the Mage Winds Series.

What didn’t you like about Karen White’s performance?

She had no idea how to say the names of characters, creatures and countries, and it felt like she had no interest in what she was reading.. Honestly, it isn't that hard to find the correct pronunciations for the words and names in this science fiction / fantasy series. I suspect Misty Lackey would have talked to Ms White and offered details that would have made the work shine.
Songs, written by Mercedes Lackey and sung by people who took the time to talk with her, are available online from Firebird Music. A few minutes of listening would have helped. Anything would have helped.

What character would you cut from Winds of Fate?

None. This is part of a series and cannon is important to the whole arc.I didn't like Darkwind's father, but he wasn't meant to be liked. He is intentionally flawed and it works for this story.

    Any additional comments?

There is nothing about this version that entices a listener to invest in more of the books. Perhaps, if I weren't so familiar with this book and the entire world Mercedes Lackey has created, it would have seemed better, Sadly, after listening to less than a chapter I had to shut it off. I tried to go back to it but gave up and re-read it instead. *Note: As originally printed the book series is lovely, the e-book versions are poorly translated from print to digital and full of typo that the author is not responsible for. This audio edition is one I will return for a refund.
