I rated the story at one star only because it has to be rated to write this review. I actually have no idea if the story is good or not since the narration was so bad I never heard the story. I will re-rate after reading it in print.
Absolutely, Asimov is awesome, it's the narrator that ruined this one for me.
Scott Brick did such a fantastic narration of most of the Foundation series, why didn't he do all of them? Those narrated by McKeever are so bad that it is as if static is playing in the background. Even after listening to the first two hours 3 different times I have no idea what happened in the story. I finally gave up. I guess this is the book I need to get for my new tablet reader so I can actually enjoy the story.
Disappointment. Before giving up I wasted a good 6 hours and have no idea what happened in the book.
Definitely worth my time. Just like Stephen King's books I love the "ride" of Hill's stories. His writing style is much like his father's and there is something great about listening to their stories. I love how this story is presented with all the flashbacks to the past.
For some reason although I liked how the story was written I didn't care for some the story itself. I think it had a lot to do with how the antagonist was creepy. I think I've just seen too much of people like him either in the news or on the TV cop shows that I hate. I think this this just a personal thing and I do believe others would enjoy it more than I did.
His performance made the book come alive for me. I never once felt like I was listening to a narrator, but rather just heard each of the characters play their part.
I'd watch the movie, even a miniseries. If they made a TV show I wouldn't be interested. It would probably be a disappointment just like Under the Dome.
For some reason I found this book difficult to listen to. I'm not sure if it was the reader or the story. I listen while working and with this book I had to listen to the first hour 3 times before really "hearing" it. The third time I sat down and "actively" listened while doing nothing else and finally the story caught and I became interested. Once I got into the story I really enjoyed it. I did feel like the ending was kind of rushed and I came away a little unsatisfied. I hope there is a second book coming soon so I can get the continuation. For some reason I felt I should enjoy this book which is why I gave it a second and third listening after not "hearing" it the first few hours of listening, and I was right. The story is really good.
I have a problem "hearing" some readers, I think some voices are just difficult for me. But once I got into the story I thought the reader did a good job.
Classy Heinlein Story
This is the Heinlein I love. A great story written well with no preaching. After listening to Glory Road, which was not much more than another extremely preachy Heinlein book, I almost deleted this book without listening to it, but I'm so glad I didn't.
I don't recall listening to other Bronson Pinchot performances, but he is one of the greats. He is very easy to listen to.
Disappointment. I really like Heinlein's stories and kept listening to this book so I could finish the end of the story, but about one third of the book is Heinlein preaching his rather strange ideas of how the world should be. Listening to this book, like many others he has written, gives me the impression that he was just one of those nerds who sat in a room playing role playing games all his life fantasizing about hanging out with hordes of naked women all the time mostly because he thought he had no chance at having a real woman in his life.
"Heinlein, you are a great writer with some amazing creativity and you can put together fantastic sci-fi stories. Why do you have to ruin so many books by being so preachy and making all of your female characters such hussies."
This is the most entertaining book I've listened too since I finished all of Cathryn Asaro's books. The author's use of humor had me laughing out loud and the story was fun and exciting all the way through. I can't wait for more.
