The Lisa McPherson story of course, but actually the story of the young woman raised in Scientology who is preparing to enter law school. Its a small bit and really not detailed much until the epilogue. But I would like to hear more about her.

Loved the CEO forcing his staff to play musical chairs to see who would lose their jobs.

Someone else thinks psychiatry and big pharma are dangerous.

What I did not get from the book was the essence of what attracts a cohort of generally intelligent group of people into such an insane and dysfunctional world. I liked this book because it confirmed my suspicions that LRHubbard was brilliant but schizophrenic. It also demonstrated the degree to which people will tolerate intolerable conditions to meet some undefined inner need. I want to know more about the actual religious doctirne. Who is Chthluthu? Can we channel Xenu at our next dinner party?I want ot know what hooks them, though. What keeps people there once they've walked through the door the first time. I want to know more about the educational theories that LRH was espousing. MAny of the children educated under the system seem well educated, though indoctrinated. I'd go visit an org but I doubt that I'd be welcome. I'm a psychiatrist.

People who appreciate adult males who feel victimized.

HE was enjoyable to listen to.

I found the writing style enjoyable and will go read more by the author. But if the main character is representative of today's male, then we do belong living in low rent housing hoping our wives will pay attention to us and praying that our children don't recognize that we have failed in taking care of them the way children should be .

A bit slow in the reading but his delivery fit the times.

Its nothing like "Savages" or "Mike Hammer with class"

The best thing I can say about Winslow's books is they aren't formulaic. HE can range from riveting to dull so choose his books carefully. Isle of Dreams, Power of the Dog, Frankie Machine were tops. And then they go and make a movie on Savages.

I well done story about an interesting man.

I listened to the abridged version because I am not a business man and I expected the unabridged version would have been excessivley detailed. This abridged version was just about right for my level of understanding.

I can't sit for that long but it did pull me along quite well.

I wish someone had taken the time to explain business to me when I was younger.

The main character is naive, obsequious and unbelieveable. I've been on long wilderness group trips before. We would have fed HER to the anaconda.

It is difficult to believe this is the same author that wrote Bel Cante. As excellent as BelCante was, State of Wonder was dreadful. One dimensional characters and a wholly improbable plot. I will still read Patchett. But I recommend giving State of Wonder a pass.

A consistent working definition of "shyness". It seemed to change as the need to apply research to this concept was twisted to support the thesis.

Not really my usual choice but I was visiting Charleston and wanted to understand that incredible city better. A little heavy on the romance and melodrama but those descriptions seem to characterize the times.

I almost gave up on this book several times. The lead character is not a likeable guy and he is presented by the narrator as being arrogant and condescending. Turns out that these are both necessary for the plot. Don't give up on it and you will be pleased.

Because I am taking the under. The essential structure of this story may be based in reality. But an awful lot does not ring true.

No. And I am shocked at the info on the movie coming out based on the book. The best parts were the characters. Bruce Willis as Dink? My guess is that this movie may be fun to watch but will be pure fiction.

The narrator saved this book. I will look for more from her.

Very disappointed

I enjoyed the descriptive history of investigation and spying. The employment of taxpayer trained government officials in the private sector working toward whoever pays the highest dollar rather than serving the country is offensive. These spies and mercenaries are no patriots and are owed nothing by their country.
