This read is well worth the price or credit! I enjoy nonfiction which is factual and moving at a pace to keep my interest. This exceeded my expectations. All of the horrific truth about the tragedy of the Titanic was told in a very humane narrative, but also how other factors interceded with the tragic event which left me stunned. There were times when I wanted to weep.
For me, this would have been a 5 star read, but for the profanity sprinkled throughout. I give the author credit that he managed to avoid the F_____ word. Other than that it was a great book. The characters were interesting and the plot moving to the very end.
Undoubtedly this is a very good author, however this book had a little too much profanity for me.
This book is absolutely chilling!! Simply because the possibilities are too close to the truth.
Excellent! This book was a surprise to me. I discovered it on the public library website and found that Audible had the audiobook. There were volatile situations which were handled with the utmost tact, giving all the descriptive evidence of the situation without gravitating toward lasciviousness or profanity. The ending was superb (in my opinion). This book is well worth the credit.
This is a great in-depth study. I intend to listen to it again and again. It's like reading the Bible and having the Holy Spirit reveal a truth to you at a specific time.
I read a review about this book before I purchased it that said "Don't give up on this book". That's exactly how I feel. I am usually turned off immediately by profanity. There was one character in the beginning of the novel who was fluent in it. There was also the telling of the inhumane treatment that this character dealt out to a small boy. (Here I have to give the author a 5 star because she was not graphic or indecent in any way.) Nevertheless the subject itself made me want to retreat. But I continued to read and a beautiful story unfolded. As author and narrator Ms. VanLiere did an excellent job.
This book was beyond the normal realm of life, amazing, and true to the character of God. It is Christian fiction (that is a novel with fictional characters), at it's best. I don't think we as Christians have touched the possibilities that God offers in this life probably because we are too afraid of going off the deep end into some kind of circus performing stance. As for me I have to remember that God is in control, He is no respector of persons, and He is unlimited and all powerful. I enjoyed every page of this book!
This is an excellent book full of real life in the African terrain. Drama so intense sometimes that it could have been a fiction page turner. There were certain parts of the African life that I found unpalatable culturally and also from a Christian perspective but references to these were minute. Anyone can tell that this man loved animals and what he learned from them is masterfully portrayed in this book.
For the most part this book is a very well written, family friendly narrative which reveals the lifestyle that existed in the 1950s in England and occasionally parts of Ireland, as seen through the eyes of a young Midwife. For the common folk conditions were hard, often deplorable. Sanitary facilities for the poor folk were almost nonexistent. About midway through the book a young girl was drawn into prostitution. The man who seduced her gave her the promise of a full stomach and compassionate companionship. Her initial contact with him encompassed her watching a full, to the point, striptease performance which left my spirit polluted. I kept listening because I expected the girl to leave the scene but she did not. Her story, which was otherwise not related in any way that was indecent or perverse, ended tragically. This young Midwife encountered all kinds of situations and had a very interesting and fulfilling career. I would have given the book 5 stars but the striptease scene really left me with dampened spirit. Also throughout the book the word a__ is used instead of buttocks. I contributed this to being part of the cultural language and not an obscenity.
