Ridley Jones is trying to get on with her life when a seemingly mundane act - picking up a few envelopes of prints at a photo lab - puts her at the nexus of a global network of crime. The shadowy figure of a man appears in almost every picture she's taken in the last year, lurking just far enough away to make identification impossible. Now the FBI is at her door, some serious bad guys are following her every move, and the family she once loved and relied on is more distant than ever.

This story could be a good one, but it is all related by one person telling what has happend in the past, and not in an organized manner. I have listed to 2 hours and now I give up. I prefer stories with action and characters interacting with one another rather than having the main character only tell you about everyone else in a haphazard way.

LAPD cop Scott James is not doing so well, not since a shocking nighttime assault by unidentified men killed his partner, Stephanie, nearly killed him, and left him enraged, ashamed, and ready to explode. He is unfit for duty - until he meets his new partner. Maggie is not doing so well, either. The German shepherd survived three tours in Iraq and Afghanistan sniffing explosives before she lost her handler to an IED and sniper attack, and her PTSD is as bad as Scott’s. They are each other’s last chance.

If you could sum up Suspect in three words, what would they be?

    engaging, spellbinding, suspense

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

I was fully engaged with the personality of Scott and the Dog from the first chapter. The story was well written and kept me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. I would like to read more of this character. When the book ended I could hardly wait for the next plot to unfold. Yet I am not sure this will be a seriers. I sure hope so.

What does MacLeod Andrews bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The drama of the situation, the anticipation of what would be said next as the story unfolds, his voice inflection added to the suspense.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Yes!

A serial killer is on the loose, and it’s up to FBI agents Dillon Savich and Lacey Sherlock to bring him down. They soon discover the killer has blood ties to an infamous and now long-dead monster. Savich and Sherlock are joined by agents Lucy Carlyle and Cooper McKnight, and the chase is on. At the same time, Agent Lucy Carlyle learns from her dying father that her grandfather didn’t simply walk away from his family twenty-two years ago: he was, in fact, murdered by his wife, Lucy’s grandmother.

What would have made Split Second: An FBI Thriller better?

if the story were more believable and if the separate themes had some connection. They were totally disconnected and the idea of Ted Bundy's daughter was outlandish and offensive. Bundy was too evil to be given even fictional recognition. Trying to connect the Bundy theme with FBI agent Lucy's theme was not just a stretch, it was a chasm too far to bridge. Lucy's story line alone would have made a compelling tale filled with family intrigue and would have held my full attention

What do you think your next listen will be?

I have loved Catherine Coulter's stories for over 20 years so the disappointment in this book was doubly unhappy. It is unlikely I will listen to one of her books again, especially if I have to pay for it. Maybe from the library where it is free? What happened to her usual excellent writing? Coulter doesn't need a gimmick like the Bundy theme to write a compelling mystery.

What aspect of Renee Raudman and Paul Costanzo ’s performance would you have changed?

It was okay, not outstanding, but very listenable.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    disappointment

    Any additional comments?

Give up the gimmicks and get back to writing compelling mysteries with Dillon and Sherlock. Develop the characters personality more and rely on the story line to carry the reader through.
