"Abandon all hope you who enter here." ("Lasciate ogne speranza voi ch’intrate.") Dante’s Hell is one of the most remarkable visions in Western literature. An allegory for his and future ages, it is, at the same time, an account of terrifying realism. Passing under a lintel emblazoned with these frightening words, the poet is led down into the depths by Virgil and shown those doomed to suffer eternal torment for vices exhibited and sins committed on earth.

The author tours the underworld, witnessing all the suffering, in a first-person account. Sometimes the language is a little hard to track as this was written hundreds of years ago and translated, but that kind of adds to the overall effect. The actor does a good job with various character voices -- generally you can distinguish them readily and dialogue does not bog down. His voice is very expressive. Don't listen when you need to be perked up!

Almost from the moment it was first set to paper, the music of Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) - technically superb, rich in quality, and widely imitated - has exemplified the Classical style, creating not only the Classical-era symphony but setting the standard, through his own 68 string quartets, against which that form has ever after been judged. And yet Haydn, despite the influence left by more than 1000 works, seems to no longer get his due, Now, in a series of eight vivid lectures, you can learn to understand and appreciate the music of one of the most original and influential composers of all time.

The narrator makes this great. He varies his pace, foreshadows, goes on occasional rants and just makes this biography very entertaining. I have listened to his long form courses. this is a great sample for someone who wants to try him out.

This compilation is great to listen to in the car. There are different voices, male and famale, African and not, and tales ranging from quick and Aesop-like to longer, from Table Mountain to north African stories. Each carries a rhythm of Africa and occasionally a song embedded.

Best-selling author Steven Johnson recounts - in dazzling, multidisciplinary fashion - the story of the brilliant man who embodied the relationship between science, religion, and politics for America's Founding Fathers. The Invention of Air is a title of world-changing ideas wrapped around a compelling narrative, a story of genius and violence and friendship in the midst of sweeping historical change that provokes us to recast our understanding of the Founding Fathers.

A fun read about an extraordinary inventor, woven together with the right blend of serendipitous twists and continuity. You can follow it on audio, and the tale moves along compellingly, connecting wacky lab science in England's for the Lunar Society all the way to the American experiment in Democracy of Jefferson and Adams.
