"Slow Paced and Predictable"
Frankly, I was so worn out by the descriptions of OCD behavior I could hardly focus on the story. I kept saying to myself "enough already, let's move on with the story!" It isn't a bad story, it just goes on too long. Despite my conviction that it could have used a LOT of editing, I did listen through the entire book. The writing was decent enough, but the ending was predictable...something I would have forgiven if I had invested about half as much time in the story.
"Fun, Entertaining"
This is an interesting twist on the creepy apartment building story, and not one I was expecting! Although very far fetched, I did enjoy the story and found myself entertained throughout. Overall, however, I don't think I can give it more than 4 stars.
"Dark British Humor"
What can go wrong, does go wrong in this black comedy of a housesitting job gone terribly, terribly wrong. The writing is first rate and the narration right on target. I found myself laughing out loud several times throughout the course of this book. I picked this up due to the deservedly high marks given by other listeners and I'm glad I did! I will be recommending it to my friends.
"A Look Into the Art World"
I really liked this book. The characters, dialogue and story rang true and I found it all compelling enough that my mind didn't wander while I was listening. I think some people might find it a little slow or lacking in drama and/or thrills. I enjoyed the quality writing and glimpse inside the business of art.
"Richly Layered"
This is a book that can be enjoyed on so many levels. The writing is first rate and the narrator couldn't be more perfect for the story. It is a pretty decent noir-type crime story but succeeds the most as a rich character study of a flawed man.
"Wow!"
I bought this because there were so many good reviews. All those reviews were right on target! This is a really great, fast paced book and the narration is top notch. I enjoyed it so much I'll be checking out other books by this author.
"Great Concept"
On the plus side, this is a great concept and well written. Narration was good. I did enjoy certain parts of the book very much. On the other hand, the story didn't consistently hit the same note (comedy, tragedy?) and sort of meandered along (slowly) until...it was over. I felt a little more enlightened about the whole point after listening to an interview with the author, but not enough to wholeheartedly recommend the book.
"Very Entertaining"
This is just a plain old good story with good narration. It is interesting, moves along quickly, has a strong female lead character and is not predictable. It's great to see books classified for "young adults" (something I am not) that have strong, independent female leads. I have recommended this book to many of my friends because I felt it was a well written, entertaining story that could be enjoyed at any age.
"Disappointed"
Due to other positive reviews, I had expected so much more prior to struggling hours and hours through this audiobook. I am the target audience for this book, too. I am the right age, a huge fan of the music and someone looking forward to reminiscing about the time. While there were some interesting gossipy parts that made it roll along a little faster in some sections, I mostly felt disappointed by what was missing in this account of a life; an apparent lack of personal insight or growth.
"Riveting"
It is generally not a good decision to be the narrator of your own book, but I think it was a good decision in this case. After listening to this, I felt like I truly understood what it was like to have an eating disorder. Not only was the writing first rate, I felt like the author was as true and honest as she could be while detailing her experience. There was not a false note anywhere.
