  • Savages: A Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (7 hrs and 25 mins)
    • By Don Winslow
    • Narrated By Michael Kramer
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Part-time environmentalist and philanthropist Ben and his ex-mercenary buddy Chon run an independent Laguna Beach–based marijuana operation, reaping significant profits from an established clientele. But they may have come up against something that they can't handle---the Mexican Baja Cartel wants in, and saying no is unacceptable. When they refuse to back down, the cartel kidnaps Ophelia, the boys' playmate and confidante.

    Theodore says: "I loved it"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Characters that did not warrant being hunted by a murderous drug cartel. Three hours in I was beginning to side with the bad guys.

Has Savages turned you off from other books in this genre?

I will be more careful with the author since he has shown he can go from absolutely excellent works, to something like this.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

With the material, he did the best he could. His narration was what kept me listening as long as I did.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Savages?

I would have handed it back to Mr. Winslow, and reminded him of the bar he set with The Power of the Dog, and The Winter of Frankie Machine.

  • Cannibal Reign

    • UNABRIDGED (14 hrs and 35 mins)
    • By Thomas Koloniar
    • Narrated By Brian Hutchison

First the asteroid would come, slamming into the earth just north of the Montana border, followed by earthquakes, tsunamis, and unending night. And after that... Hell. Astronomer Marty Chittenden is the first to recognize the approaching doom - a discovery that makes him a marked man. Green Beret Jack Forrest knows the catastrophe is inevitable and begins stockpiling an abandoned missile silo with supplies while gathering together a small community of men, women, and children he prays can survive the apocalypse.

Dan says: "My opinion?? Dead on glimpse into the What if!!"
What disappointed you about Cannibal Reign?

Seven Billion people in the world, I am only one, and that's how much my opinion counts, but given the rave reviews I read about this book, I think this needs to be said.
One of the reviewers referenced Alas Babylon, one of my favorites and one of the best of this genre. I'm amazed at that, there is no comparison between the two works. The characters in this book seem far more interested in their love lives than the reality of billions of people on the outside of the bunker dying or about to go through a living hell. In all fairness, I only got four hours into the story, but I really couldn't justify any more time on so very many one dimensional characters and such bland story telling. For an end of life as we know it story, there really was no emotion passed from the writer through his words.

Would you ever listen to anything by Thomas Koloniar again?

I don't know, but probably not for some time to come.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Brian Hutchison?

Sure, he seems like a good narrator, it was a weak piece, not his fault.

What character would you cut from Cannibal Reign?

I'll tell you the one I would keep. The man in the jeep that saves the astronomer and his girlfriend. He was the only believable character to me and he had heart, I felt an emotional connection for the couple of minutes he was alive.

    Any additional comments?

To each his own. But I believe I will stick with the classics for a while.

  • Revival: A Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (13 hrs and 24 mins)
    • By Stephen King
    • Narrated By David Morse
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

In a small New England town, over half a century ago, a shadow falls over a small boy playing with his toy soldiers. Jamie Morton looks up to see a striking man, the new minister. Charles Jacobs, along with his beautiful wife, will transform the local church. The men and boys are all a bit in love with Mrs. Jacobs; the women and girls feel the same about Reverend Jacobs - including Jamie’s mother and beloved sister, Claire. With Jamie, the Reverend shares a deeper bond based on a secret obsession.

Thug4life says: "Not fit for a King"
    "Struggling to the finish."
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Someone who is new to King possibly. Who comes to the book without expectations and ignorant of the over the top ratings this book managed to get. Someone just looking for a dark story and slow pace.

What do you think your next listen will be?

Another Steinbeck maybe, or Koontz, who remains my favorite.

Would you be willing to try another one of David Morse’s performances?

Probably not. His voice on this audiobook was a very long and difficult listen for me.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Boredom, waiting for the punch, waiting for anything really. Disappointment definitely, I looked forward to this release for some time.

    Any additional comments?

Sample before you buy, pre-orders can be risky even with the best authors.
