Startling, unusual, and yet irresistably readable, Among Others is at once the compelling story of a young woman struggling to escape a troubled childhood, a brilliant diary of first encounters with the great novels of modern fantasy and SF, and a spellbinding tale of escape from ancient enchantment.

Would you try another book from Jo Walton and/or Katherine Kellgren?

    No.

What was most disappointing about Jo Walton’s story?

Lack of a plot. Constant discussion of SF authors a pointless addition to story.

Which character – as performed by Katherine Kellgren – was your favorite?

Kellegren did a good job with weak material.

What character would you cut from Among Others?

    None.

    Any additional comments?

Hard to believe that this won a Hugo.

We live across the thousand dunes with grit in our teeth and sand in our homes. No one will come for us. No one will save us. This is our life, diving for remnants of the old world so that we may build what the wind destroys. No one is looking down on us. Those constellations in the night sky? Those are the backs of gods we see.

Ok, but too much like previous books. Just replaces Silo with Sand. I would rather he did more with previous characters. All seemed a bit rushed.

It’s only a slight exaggeration to say that the British mathematician Alan Turing (1912-1954) saved the Allies from the Nazis, invented the computer and artificial intelligence, and anticipated gay liberation by decades--all before his suicide at age forty-one. This classic biography of the founder of computer science, reissued on the centenary of his birth with a substantial new preface by the author, is the definitive account of an extraordinary mind and life.

A little dense but very enlightening. Worth a listen if you are interested in computers or equal rights or even biology.
