With the closing of the Harlan County, Kentucky coalmines, marijuana has become the biggest cash crop in the state. A hundred pounds of it can gross three-hundred thousand dollars, but that’s chump change compared to the quarter million a human body can get you - especially when it’s sold off piece-by-piece. So when Dickie and Coover Crowe, dope-dealing brothers known for sampling their own supply, decide to branch out into the body business, it’s up to U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens to stop them.

I was excited by the prospect of listening to Raylan, as I've become a fan of not only Elmore Leonard's novels but also the the TV Series Justified. While the book is only six hours long for the unabridged version, I've still yet to finish it, I find it so bad. Normally I finish one book before I purchase another, but it's almost as if I am looking for any other book so I don't have to finish this one.

If you've spent any time watching the show, skip listening to the book. The plot is basically just a rehash of seasons one and two, only the characters have been given different names in several instances. The book is also covering some of the story arc from season three too.

Not wanting to get into plot spoilers, I must say that the folks putting together the writing for the TV series have done a far better job than Leonard has done for this book. It's as if he wanted to cash in on the Justified success, and phoned it in by ripping pages directly from the scripts and trying to tailor them to his new novel. Pronto, Riding the Rap, and Tishimingo Blues are far better examples of Leonard's work. I'd recommend avoiding this novel, but if you feel that you must listen to it, wait till it drops under $10...

On his last combat deployment, Lt. Cmdr. James Reece's entire team was killed in an ambush that also claimed the lives of the aircrew sent in to rescue them. But when those dearest to him are murdered on the day of his homecoming, Reece discovers that this was not an act of war by a foreign enemy but a conspiracy that runs to the highest levels of government. Now, with no family and free from the military's command structure, Reece applies the lessons that he's learned in over a decade of constant warfare toward revenge.

So I started this book at the beginning of the week. I'm done with it today. I just couldn't stop listening. Jack Carr wrote a tight thriller that leaves the audience looking for more. There were things that I heard while listening to the novel that I knew were fiction, but were just far enough into the realm of plausible, I had to ask myself "Hmmm, what if"? The character of James Reese is brought to life by Ray Porter (Who incidentally has become one of my new favorite narrators), and really draws the listener into the story. It's like being a fly on the wall as a man hell bent on revenge goes out in search of it. I look forward to Jack Carr's next novel, and hope I don't have to wait too long!

The first book in this series was good enough that it had me wanting to listen to the second. only thing is, the second is written in such a way that we now have four different points of view and four different narrators to go along with it. it felt clunky in that way. It is my understanding that a third book will be coming later this year, but with the way this one seems to wrap up the story, and the style in which it was written, I think I'm probably going to pass.

I wasn't entirely certain about this book, but decided to take a chance when I saw it on one of Audible's lists of great audiobooks. I was concerned that given it's length, that it would take to long to get the story going, and that I'd be getting bogged down in minutiae. Was I ever wrong. This book was gripping from beginning to end. Ray Porter's narration lends the book a certain gravitas as we listen to the journey of a DEA agent, narco trafficker, Irish gangster, high-end call girl, and an idealistic Catholic priest all collide together. Truly an incredible listen from beginning to end.

Along for the ride is David Kraft, a back -office employee who will help run numbers but is mostly useful to help carry Jack's bags. But all isn't what it seems. Kraft has a secret past. One that may be very much closer to the surface than it first appears, and one that has put both men in terrible danger.

While the Jack Ryan Jr books don't have the same feel that the ones involving Sr do, that's not necessarily a bad thing. The transition from Mark Greaney to Marc Cameron appears to be essentially seamless (though it probably helped that Scott Brick once again did a masterful job of bringing Jr's universe to life). I look forward to seeing where Cameron takes these characters next. If you enjoy this novel and are new to Cameron's work, check out his Jericho Quinn series as it'll tide you over till the next Jack Ryan novel.

Normally I appreciate a good thriller, but this one was just ok. The story concept was a decent one, but I found the writing to be a bit cliche and trite. Our hero never suffers any major set backs, only minor inconveniences. I really had to suspend reality while listening. Seeing as how this is the first book in the series, I'll likely try another one and see if things get better as the author gets more comfortable.

it wasn't a bad story, but the plot line was a bit difficult to follow at times. The shifting points of view from one character to another left me feeling lost at times, especially if I wasn't fully engaged with the story (which was sadly often). I might give this author another shot, but after I work through a couple of other series instead.

Meet Jonathan Quinn: a freelance operative with a take-no-prisoners style and the heart of a loner. His job? Professional "cleaner". Nothing too violent, just disposing of bodies. But his latest assignment will change everything. The job seemed simple enough: investigating a suspicious case of arson. But when a dead body turns up, and Quinn's handlers at "the Office" turn strangely silent, he knows he's in over his head. With only a handful of clues, Quinn struggles to find out why someone wants him dead.

A former CIA SOG operative, Pearce used his intelligence and combat skills to hunt down America’s sworn enemies in the War on Terror. But after a decade of clandestine special ops, Pearce opted out. Too many of his friends had been sacrificed on the altar of political expediency. Now Pearce and his team chose which battles he will take on by deploying his land, sea, and air drones with surgical precision.

Having run out of books by my favorite authors (Griffin, Clancy, Flynn, Demille, etc) to read, I was looking for something new to spend my most recent credit on. I came across Mike Maden's Drone. In an age where a large bit of our military capability has been outsourced to private military contractors, this book seemed to be incredibly timely and indicative of the world we currently live in. The story was riveting and kept a nice pace all the way through. I felt that the end was a little weak, but not enough to take away from the overall story. It was good enough that I hope we will see more from Maden, and his character Troy Pierce.

I'm actually quite a fan of the Alex Hawke series, and up until this book I felt that all of Bell's other books weren't bad at all. It's not that this was a bad story, or even a bad book but it felt very rushed at the end. There was a lot of time spent on all the rising action (as well as remembering things that had happened in previous Hawke Novels), and when it came time for the climax/denouement it was kind of dissatisfying. John Shea's performance as Lord Hawke, was as good as any of his other ones, I think if you've listened to any of the other books in the series, then this one is an OK companion to the rest of them. If you're new to the series, I highly recommend starting at one of the earlier novels where the story seems to flow a little better.
