"Great book"
Any one with a family member with a disability that is neurological in origin will appreciate this book. The author's final chapter says it all. Great narrator.
"Too much detail again"
I listened to another John Rain novel, Hard Rain. These books are so tedious. I mean who in their right mind thinks about how their wristwatch was made while waiting for the kidnappers of your best friend to call back?
I could care less what kind of tomatoes were used to make his lunch. This book, like the other one drones on about the surroundings, describes every detail about the food he's eating, the clothes people are wearing. I couldn't finish this book.
Next to no action again. I will not listen to another "John Rain" book. They should put these books into a Fashion, Travel, Food category, not mystery thrillers. There is no mystery or thrill about this book.
Plain boring. Even Scott Brick couldn't bring this one off. I feel sorry he even had to narrate it. He must've found it incredibly boring too.
"Was the narrator in a hurry?"
Did they give this guy a deadline? He spoke so fast if you were distracted for just a few seconds you missed a lot. I slowed the speed down for my iPod, and some chapters were tolerable. Then he used a normal speaking speed, I had to change back. Next chapter he was rushing again. I got tired of dealing with it so I never finished listening for more than a couple of hours. I think this would have been a great book if not for the narration.
"Not his best"
This was my third Jack Reacher book. The first two were great especially Killing Floor. It really got me into the Jack Reacher series. I didn't finish this one. If I was supposed to feel sorry for Carmen, I couldn't do it. Jack is a smart guy but he fell her story hook, line and sinker. Not like him in other the other books. He questions every thing. The book should have been over in the first two hours. Jack Reacher I've come to know in other books would have walked away.
Dick Hill is a great narrator of these stories and I'm glad Lee Child continues to use him. Love him as Reacher, but please never again have a grown man do a six year old girl's voice.
"What is his point?"
I listened to over two hours of this book and still have no idea what the author is trying to impart to the reader. He also makes the assumption you have read every history book he cites and know the context of the passage(s) he's citing. He cites many, many books, authors, and passages. He is all over the place, he never gets an idea fully across to the reader.
I spent most of the two hours listening trying to figure what the point of this book is. I'm not getting any "wonderful insight". The dust jacket is better reading than the book is.
I've downloaded well over 100 books on Audible and this is one of the worst. I'm sorry I wasted my money. I will not finish this one.
"One of the few"
I must be one of the few who did not like this book. It couldn't seem to capture my attention. I found myself wincing at the swearing every couple of seconds in the book. Although, the person may have been quoting someone, I found it totally distracting. I couldn't listen to even two hours of this book. It seemed to me to be more about womanizing, swearing, backstabbing, drinking parties, etc.
I have downloaded and listened to more than 60 non-fiction books and by far this one of the worst. If the author would have stuck to the plot more cohesively and left out most of the swearing and how many women the guy(s) slept with, drinking parties, etc, maybe I could've stuck it out.
I did not like it at all.
"Great book"
The only thing I didn't like about the narration was that the person would say the person's name before quoting them. This was done quite often. Although it makes it obviously clear who is being quoted, it was done way too much in the book. I found myself saying Anatoli throughout the book and it would get stuck in my head like a bad song throughout the day.
This book is very, very good. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys the adventure survival type books. I would've given this book five stars if the narration style was changed. I will listen to it again, regardless.
"Best listen ever"
This is the best book I've ever read or listened to. Very inspiring to know there are people out there standing against the system and making a huge difference in people's lives. I know where I plan to donate to charity this year.
"Junk Science"
Unfortunately there were no reviews on this book before I downloaded it. I wouldn't waste my money on this one. The author has many theories, and contradicts his own theories throughout the only three chapters I was able to listen to. Download Mountains Beyond Mountains, or Demon Under the Microscope. I will listen to those two books again and again.
