One of the great classics of world literature and the inspiration for the most beloved stage musical of all time, Les Misérables is legendary author Victor Hugo’s masterpiece. This extraordinary English version by renowned translator Julie Rose captures all the majesty and brilliance of Hugo’s work. Here is the timeless story of the quintessential hunted man—Jean Valjean—and the injustices, violence, and social inequalities that torment him.

This is Irving Stone's powerful and passionate biographical novel of Michelangelo. His time: the turbulent Renaissance, the years of poisoning princes, warring popes, the all-powerful Medici family, the fanatic monk Savonarola. His loves: the frail and lovely daughter of Lorenzo de Medici; the ardent mistress of Marco Aldovrandi; and his last love - his greatest love - the beautiful, unhappy Vittoria Colonna.

In this accessible and engaging book, Ralph Wood shows us that J.R.R. Tolkien's masterpiece is a deeply Christian work because it does not blink back the horrors of our terrible times but confronts them with startling honesty.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy has delighted millions of fans worldwide in book and movie form. With the theatrical release of the two-part film The Hobbit slated for 2012 and 2013, attention will once again turn to J. R. R. Tolkien's classic works. In a culture where truth is relative and morality is viewed as old-fashioned, we welcome the chance to view the world through hobbit eyes: we have free will, our choices matter, and living a morally heroic life is possible....

The previous review gave me pause of getting this book but I chose to try it.This is my overview.I am in sympathy with his strong words about the very true fact that this writer is dealing with war and torture and again and again returning to it.I, who am as shell shocked from the left in our culture as the next person, felt a very strong desire to stop this book when in the 2 chapter WATERBORDING came up.However,I realize that is about our media .So I continued listening.I quickly realized the writer is NOT left.nor right.NOT A PACIFIST.What he does is open up and detail Tolkiens Catholic views of morality and position on war and treatment of each other within and revield through The Lord of The rings.[without any admitting the Christian origin]...In fact this book is not about war at all but MORALITY.I do not think the author even knows Its actualy Catholic social doctrine.. If he does he almost seems to hide this fact,,I dont know him or his motives and like his book so i leave that to him..Tolkien was a devout Catholic so his moral wisdom would permiate his books.....anyway,if you are interested in a very good treatment of Tolkien and the Moral wisdom of his great works,I think you will like this treatment..but I do have to say ..'boy was this a terribly TITLED book';....

Purgatory is the second part of Dante's The Divine Comedy. The listener finds the Poet, with his guide Virgil, ascending the terraces of the Mount of Purgatory inhabited by those doing penance to expiate their sins on earth. There are the proud - forced to circle their terrace for eons bent double in humility; the slothful running around crying out examples of zeal and sloth; while the lustful are purged by fire.

In this third and final part of The Divine Comedy, Dante encounters the just rulers and holy saints of the Church. The horrors of the Inferno and the trails of Purgatory are left far behind. Ultimately, in Paradise, Dante is granted a vision of God's Heavenly court - the angels, the Blessed Virgin, and God Himself.

When you ask people about their most cherished values in life, "happiness" is always at the top of the list. But surprisingly few people claim real happiness. We seem to be completely satisfied with nothing, and indeed, there is little correlation between the circumstances of people's lives and how happy they are.

being there is a wash of books on seeking happiness and a large portion of those new age trash, to find one authentic and wise is a treat. This book seems to me a real treat.I agree greatly with all but one chapter in this book. That chapter is on unconditional love with God,yet even this mr.Prager handles as his opinion only based on his Jewish possition.I highly respect this even though I do not experience the Love of God as non-unconditional as he does. yet his opinion does contains wisdom gems within it,for I agree that the idea of unconditional love is often used and abused out of context .I very much like this author and thinker. He goes straight to first principles again and again.I beleive you will like this book and if by its teaching your a little more happy, isnt that worth a credit..hope you enjoy...

In this visionary book, Dennis Prager, one of America's most original thinkers, contends that humanity confronts a monumental choice. The world must decide between American values and its two oppositional alternatives: Islamism and European-style democratic socialism. Prager makes the case for the American value system as the most viable program ever devised to produce a good society. Those values are explained here more clearly and persuasively than ever before.

"Call me Ishmael." Thus starts the greatest American novel. Melville said himself that he wanted to write "a mighty book about a mighty theme" and so he did. It is a story of one man's obsessive revenge-journey against the white whale, Moby-Dick, who injured him in an earlier meeting. Woven into the story of the last journey of The Pequod is a mesh of philosophy, rumination, religion, history, and a mass of information about whaling through the ages.
