Graham Greene’s evocative analysis of the love of self, the love of another, and the love of God is an English classic that has been translated for the stage, the screen, and even the opera house. Academy Award-winning actor Colin Firth (The King’s Speech, A Single Man) turns in an authentic and stirring performance for this distinguished audio release.

  • Under the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith

    • UNABRIDGED (12 hrs and 37 mins)
    • By Jon Krakauer
    • Narrated By Scott Brick

    Overall

    Story
    (600)

At the core of this book is an appalling double murder committed by two Mormon fundamentalist brothers, Ron and Dan Lafferty, who insist they received a revelation from God commanding them to kill their blameless victims. Weaving the story of the Lafferty brothers and their fanatical brethren with a clear-eyed look at Mormonism's violent past, Krakauer examines the underbelly of the most successful homegrown faith in the United States, and finds a distinctly American brand of religious extremism.

Elysabeth Cummings says: "Interesting @ arm's length"

Would you listen to Under the Banner of Heaven again? Why?

A well-known writer and researcher takes an historical look at the Mormon LDS faith...and connects the "beliefs" and "thinking" to modern day. Still hard to understand why it appeals to many unless they were raised in it and never questioned it.

What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?

The gruesome murder of a mother and child in the name of Fundamentalist LDS belief.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

It made a cross-country car ride go by much more quickly.

In A Short History of Nearly Everything, Bill Bryson takes his ultimate journey - into the most intriguing and consequential questions that science seeks to answer. It's a dazzling quest, as this insatiably curious writer attempts to understand everything that has transpired from the Big Bang to the rise of civilization.

Where does A Short History of Nearly Everything rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Fascinating! Scientific history told as a story - I had my doubts when I bought it, but I have recommended it to many. Very, very interesting...especially for people who never enjoyed science before.

A Signature Performance: Kenneth Branagh plays this like a campfire ghost story, told by a haunted, slightly insane Marlow.

Would you listen to Heart of Darkness: A Signature Performance by Kenneth Branagh again? Why?

I might listen again only because I don't "listen" as well as I "read" a book. I seem to pay more attention when I read than when I listen, maybe because I'm more of a visual than auditory learner.

What about Kenneth Branagh’s performance did you like?

His voice is exquisite. A pleasure to my ears to listen to his voice.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

    No...
