The book relied on letters, notes and comments from people who knew Salinger and simply read or quoted them. The same theme used to depict the complex character of the author is used over and over. After the first part, I could not go on.
It was fair, but he had difficult material.
I did like the reader. The book was really too depressing to be enjoyable for me.
The reader kept me listening long after I grew tired of the book.
Only if I begin taking anti-depressants before I read it.
Baldacci has never really regained his story telling ability and I will never waste my time listening to one of his books again. It was absolutely torturous and as about as entertaining as driving across west Texas. This is not a mystery nor a thriller, just endless boring dialogue. The characters are not likable and the storyline is absurd. If you are have trouble sleeping, listen to this. It will put you to sleep right away. DO NOT waste your money. How this ever made it to the New York Times bestseller list is the real mystery.
Without doubt the best book I have ever listened to. As a child of the 50's whose parents employed a black maid whose love and guidance shaped my life, I was overwhelmed with emotion. The readers brought the characters to life and you are mesmerized by their theatrical skill. I literally could not stop listening. It went with me when I drove, when I worked out, when I ate and when I went to sleep. My wife is now addicted to it. Thank all you for an unforgettable performance and to you Kathyrn Stockett for what will become an American classic.
