Folksy and fresh, endearing and affecting, Fried Green Here is the now-classic novel of two women in the 1980s; of gray-headed Mrs. Threadgoode telling her life story to Evelyn, who is in the sad slump of middle age. The tale she tells is also of two women - of the irrepressibly daredevilish tomboy Idgie and her friend Ruth - who back in the thirties ran a little place in Whistle Stop, Alabama, a Southern kind of Cafe Wobegon offering good barbecue and good coffee and all kinds of love and laughter, even an occasional murder.

What made the experience of listening to Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe the most enjoyable?

This reader was an older lady and I felt like she was a dear old friend telling me a story!

What does Lorna Raver bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I really got into the sense of an older lady's mind set

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, but wanted it to last longer than that!!

The Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingway's most enduring works. Told in language of great simplicity and power, it is the story of an old Cuban fisherman, down on his luck, and his supreme ordeal, a relentless, agonizing battle with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream. Here Hemingway recasts, in strikingly contemporary style, the classic theme of courage in the face of defeat, of personal triumph won from loss.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Old Man and the Sea to be better than the print version?

My first listen to a Hemmingway novel. So well written, the story kept me so involved and I was truly awed by how well he conveys a thought.

What does Donald Sutherland bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

His voice quality and the style he brings to this novel actually makes this book even better!

    Any additional comments?

This is a very short listen and you won't be disappointed!
