I really enjoyed this book enormously! It is so perfectly read, you can picture the characters in your mind. Having the various voices adds so much to the story, especially with the Chinese accents. It is a terrific story; gave me lots to think about. I would highly recommend it.
A dear friend recommended this book to me so I thought sure I would really enjoy it, but I didn't. The story is OK, and the reader does a fine job, there are just too many stereotypical characters. I couldn't believe in or relate to them. It just plods along to its inevitable conclusion. I have listened to many terrific books set in India and enjoyed them but this sadly was not one of them.
This is a terrifically gripping book, it will give you much to think about beyond the story. I feel like I learned a lot from Amanda's story; about pain, depression, courage and hope. I listened to the last 4 hours straight through, even though I knew the ending it was so fascinating to hear the saga. Amanda does a wonderful job of reading the book, she is quite gifted. I am not going to go into what it is about, you can read that anywhere. I don't listen to a lot of non fiction or biographies, but this own is fabulous.
I selected this book based on reviews and I was very disappointed. The main character is a "super woman" who although she caves in on the job to a panic attack can mount a heroic escape from a deranged killer and move on with her agenda. I don't know people like this. The main plot of the victims of sexual abuse is interesting and compelling but the story built around this theme was cheesy to me. I like to have an illusion of reality and also it helps if you like the main character. "Kat" was neither believable or likable for me. Some of the other reviewers said this is classic Greg Iles, so now I know not to buy any more of his books.
If you want something to keep you listening and thinking, this isn't it. It is cotton candy for the mind. I have never listened to this author before so I didn't know that she wrote romance stories. If that is what you are looking for then you will probably enjoy this, so many other reviewers have. If you want excitement or suspense don't buy this one.
I am a big fan of this author but sometimes the stories overdose on violence, that is not the case with this book. It is the second one in the series and even better than the first. The story has the author's usual dry wit which I enjoy very much. The mystery is good and I really like the background of Belfast during "The Troubles." The reader is excellent so I gave the book 5 stars all the way around!
I just looked over the other reviews of this book and I am struck by how many people loved it, just a couple of reviewers had the same experience that I did. I was caught up right away by the story, thought it was going to be great and ordered a paper copy for a friend. I should have waited. Perhaps reading it wouldn't be as bad as listening to the reader who told the story from Peter's perspective. Whine whine whine! Even during the time in his life when he is supposedly happy he sounds whiney. I had hoped for a story more about Texas and less about relationships in this family. It seemed to me frequently to be written not from the actual history, but more from a politically correct point of view currently in fashion. This is not great literature or great performance, think twice before using your credit on this book.
This is one of the best mysteries I have listened to in a long time. It is the kind of story that you find yourself thinking about even when you aren't listening. In the beginning I felt a bit confused about the character's names, but after a bit I was able to keep them straight. And what interesting characters they are! The reader does an amazing job, using a Danish accent for the characters and then switching for the narration. It is truly an intriguing story that I would recommend to any mystery fans. I had to make myself turn off the ipod so I would listen it all up!
I chose this book based on reviews and didn't take the time to listen to a sample. I will not make that mistake again. The overly dramatic performance by Scott Brick was nauseating; when I got to the part where his voice was breaking over a dead lizard I knew I was done. I almost always finish a book, even if I don't think it is that great, but this book was so annoying I just could not go on any longer. Oh yes, the story line is also quite unbelievable. So here is a review to counteract all those listeners that loved it, count me a dissenting voice. Everyone is different, but I suggest you listen to the preview before you buy. This is one book I wish I could get my credit back on.
You will not be sorry if you buy this book! I am so happy to see that it is the first of a series. The story and performance are top notch. For me the only bad thing is that sometimes I listen to books at night when I can't sleep. This book does not help! It is so gripping and interesting that you can't nod off at all. The characters are all well drawn, the story intriguing, and the performance among the best I have heard on Audible.
thought provoking story
The dialogue and character development.
She gave the characters life without stretching to voices out of her range. She let the story be the important thing, not her performance.
Its perfect the way it is.
This might be more of a woman's book, I'm not sure my husband would enjoy it, but I think most of my women friends and book club groups would appreciate it. There is a lot to think about or discuss in the story. I plan to purchase copies for friends. I hope this author will write another book again soon.
