I finished this book, but there were times when I really was tempted to stop. It was an interesting tale, but the main problem with the recording is the reader. I had listened a bit before I bought, but the part I heard was a male voice, the problem was when the reader had to use a female voice. I was really relieved when one character died so that I didn't have to hear him speak for her anymore. A reader really can make or break a book, and I would say this reader almost ruined a classic.
I am a big fan of this author but sometimes the stories overdose on violence, that is not the case with this book. It is the second one in the series and even better than the first. The story has the author's usual dry wit which I enjoy very much. The mystery is good and I really like the background of Belfast during "The Troubles." The reader is excellent so I gave the book 5 stars all the way around!
I just looked over the other reviews of this book and I am struck by how many people loved it, just a couple of reviewers had the same experience that I did. I was caught up right away by the story, thought it was going to be great and ordered a paper copy for a friend. I should have waited. Perhaps reading it wouldn't be as bad as listening to the reader who told the story from Peter's perspective. Whine whine whine! Even during the time in his life when he is supposedly happy he sounds whiney. I had hoped for a story more about Texas and less about relationships in this family. It seemed to me frequently to be written not from the actual history, but more from a politically correct point of view currently in fashion. This is not great literature or great performance, think twice before using your credit on this book.
This is one of the best mysteries I have listened to in a long time. It is the kind of story that you find yourself thinking about even when you aren't listening. In the beginning I felt a bit confused about the character's names, but after a bit I was able to keep them straight. And what interesting characters they are! The reader does an amazing job, using a Danish accent for the characters and then switching for the narration. It is truly an intriguing story that I would recommend to any mystery fans. I had to make myself turn off the ipod so I would listen it all up!
I chose this book based on reviews and didn't take the time to listen to a sample. I will not make that mistake again. The overly dramatic performance by Scott Brick was nauseating; when I got to the part where his voice was breaking over a dead lizard I knew I was done. I almost always finish a book, even if I don't think it is that great, but this book was so annoying I just could not go on any longer. Oh yes, the story line is also quite unbelievable. So here is a review to counteract all those listeners that loved it, count me a dissenting voice. Everyone is different, but I suggest you listen to the preview before you buy. This is one book I wish I could get my credit back on.
You will not be sorry if you buy this book! I am so happy to see that it is the first of a series. The story and performance are top notch. For me the only bad thing is that sometimes I listen to books at night when I can't sleep. This book does not help! It is so gripping and interesting that you can't nod off at all. The characters are all well drawn, the story intriguing, and the performance among the best I have heard on Audible.
thought provoking story
The dialogue and character development.
She gave the characters life without stretching to voices out of her range. She let the story be the important thing, not her performance.
Its perfect the way it is.
This might be more of a woman's book, I'm not sure my husband would enjoy it, but I think most of my women friends and book club groups would appreciate it. There is a lot to think about or discuss in the story. I plan to purchase copies for friends. I hope this author will write another book again soon.
Probably not because I had read the book many years ago, but that doesn't mean that I don't think it was a top notch listen.
Victor Henry, he is not a perfect man, he has faults like all normal people, but he strives to do his best and be an honorable man.
I have not, but I will look for them. He is an amazing performer, perhaps the best I have heard as a long time subscriber to Audible.
I will admit that I hated to turn it off and many times listened to it at night when I couldn't sleep.
Be sure to listen to Winds of War first. Even if you read these books they are worth a listen.
Well obviously lots of people have based on the rave reviews I read, but they are not people I can relate to. I enjoy Michael Connelly very much and I am mystified as to why he endorsed this author. I found the story to be implausible, and absurd. The reader's voice was also grating and added nothing to a poor quality story. It is an insult to compare Nesbo to Stieg Larsson, they are not in the same class at all. In answer to the question about who would like this book I can only guess people who enjoy sex and violence whether it adds anything to the story or not.
Not sure, I don't feel like I can trust the ratings anymore.
I found his voice to be cloying and creepy.
Among the top 25
Victor (Pug) Henry is everyman at his best, he is the man you wish you knew and even when he slips you can forgive him.
He did an amazing job with all of the character's voices.
I listened to it every possible minute, it mesmerized me.
I had read the book when it first came out and loved it, but I think I enjoyed it even more now as a mature adult, wife and mother. I had forgotten much of the story and found the actual war part to be much more interesting now that I have lived in Europe and Japan. I am eagerly anticipating the sequel.
This is a fantastic and uplifting book, I would recommend it for anyone. I could barely stop listening to it, the story is riveting. You won't find a better example of courage anywhere. This book should be required reading in high school, we have become so soft; here is a man who endured the most challenging things and held on to his dignity and honor. Even after he slips he had the integrity to pull himself together. Please listen to this book, you will want to tell everyone about it.
