"Fascinating, but didn't need to be a whole book"
Only listened to the audio.
That other book where people eat each other's dead bodies (the plane crash in the mountains that happened in the last 20 years , don't remember the name).
No. The narration was flawless, though.
Cry, a little. I was sad that some people chose to kill and eat their dogs rather than eat the already dead bodies of family members. I don't see eating someone who is dead in order to survive is shameful. I do see killing your faithful dog and eating it is shameful if there is an alternative.
The book could have been half the length, taking away the digression about cannibalism, which is what people, including myself, are fascinated with, but the cannibalism was not the most important part of the Donner parties journey. To me the interesting aspect was how the survivors and witnesses felt a change in the moral view of the world.
"Hope Davis is perfect for this"
Yes. It was more intellectual than a standard bestseller, but it was also gripping, thrilling, unputdownable.
The changing relationship between Mirena and Dr. Swenson.
I've seen her on tv. I'll look for her again on audio. She had a remarkable ability to do all sorts of different voices and accents.
Easter, to find out what became of his life after the book ends.
"Tons of Fun"
I listened to this book with my 10 yr old son on a 7 hour car ride. We were so gripped by the story that we stayed in the driveway to keep listening to it even after we got to our destination.
Totally on the edge of my seat. The different stories from the male protaginist and the female protagonist were enthralling. SO fun.
They captured the characters perfectly. The acting was flawless.
Laugh.
Will be looking out for this author and narrator.
"Not her best..."
Probably not. It's the least favorite of Lionel shriver"s books, for me.
Nothing. The writing is superb. The subject matter didn't interest me.
The part here the main character's illsuions about his icon are shattered. Can't be too specific because I don't remember.
Sure. It would be on Showtime or HBO. I see Rupert Everett as being the star.
I like it better when Lionel Shriver's narrator is a woman.
"Dated, hard to follow"
Anthony Powell fans, I guess
Nothing. It seems like it was a great book for the times, but is now irrelevant, to me at least.
I didn't listen past the first hour.
The narrator kept me listening, but the story couldn't sustain me.
Won't be listening to Anthony Powell again, but would like the same narrator reading something else.
"annoying, cutesy"
Maybe someone else would enjo it. For me it was way too cutesy and trying to be eccentric.
Probably a book by Margot Livesey or Lionel Shriver
Thr narrator was not at fault for my overall bad review. She did the best she could do with this story.
The narrator. I didn't listen past the first hour, though.
Just not my style. I bought it becase it was $.95. I love that Audible offers refunds. It makes me unafraid to try a new author.
"perfect for my 10 yr old"
The simplicity
I also boughtDon't know much about Hisrory, which is more for adults, but I found this kid friendly version easier to follow and memorize. My son really liks it, and is able to recall details after listening. he wasn't able to do that with "Don't Know Much about History.
"perfect narrator"
yes
Mayor of Casterbridge and jude the Obscure, same sns of the inexorable destiny
Th mood, the voices, he was amazing
The hazards of pride
All Hardy books should be read by Simon Vance
