A smart and funny book by a prominent Harvard psychologist, which uses groundbreaking research and (often hilarious) anecdotes to show us why we're so lousy at predicting what will make us happy, and what we can do about it.

Although I am very interested in, and have read a fair amount about positive psychology, I found this book almost unlistenable. Found my happiness in switching to another book.

If you're reading this, chances are your life, or the life of someone you know, is shaped by pain - and the physical and emotional suffering that usually accompany it. The good news: Jon Kabat-Zinn and his colleagues have helped thousands of people learn to use the power of mindfulness to transform their relationship to pain and suffering, and discover new degrees of freedom for living with greater ease and quality of life.

Would you listen to Meditation for Pain Relief again? Why?

Yes - I listen to it several times a week.

What did you like best about this story?

    It's not a story

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

    Nothing to suggest

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Not applicable

    Any additional comments?

I am finding this meditation audio very helpful in dealing with chronic pain. I was skeptical, and it has not made the pain go completely away, but changing my attitude toward the pain and taking the time to meditate on it several times each week has helped a lot. I don't get depressed and anxious about the pain anymore and it does seem to be less than before.

Stoneybridge is a small town on the west coast of Ireland where all the families know one another. When Chicky Starr decides to take an old, decaying mansion set high on the cliffs overlooking the windswept Atlantic Ocean and turn it into a restful place for a holiday by the sea, everyone thinks she is crazy. Helped by Rigger (a bad boy turned good who is handy around the house) and Orla, her niece (a whiz at business), Chicky is finally ready to welcome the first guests to Stone House’s big warm kitchen, log fires, and understated elegant bedrooms.

If you could sum up A Week in Winter in three words, what would they be?

I listened to this book with sadness, knowing that it's the last one that Maeve Binchy ever wrote. It is quintessential Binchy - full of charm and character development and people overcoming the obstacles in their lives. Loved it!

What did you like best about this story?

The characters are almost all captivating

This riveting debut set in 1534 England secured C. J. Sansom’s place “among the most distinguished of modern historical novelists” (P. D. James). When Henry VIII’s emissary is beheaded at an English monastery, hunchbacked lawyer Matthew Shardlake is dispatched to solve the crime. But as he uncovers a cesspool of sin, three more murders occur - and Matthew may be the next target.

  • My Dog Tulip

Distinguished British man of letters J. R. Ackerley hardly thought himself a dog lover when, well into middle age, he came into possession of a German shepherd named Tulip. To his surprise, she turned out to be the love of his life, the “ideal friend” he had been seeking in vain for years. My Dog Tulip is a bittersweet retrospective account of their 16-year companionship, as well as a profound and subtle meditation on the strangeness that lies at the heart of all relationships.

What would have made My Dog Tulip better?

There were a few amusing and/or heartfelt moments in this book, but the emphasis on scatalogical detail was gross. There is only so much I wish to hear about a dog's gastrointestinal and reproductive systems. Whole chapters are devoted to these matters in My Dog Tulip.

Has My Dog Tulip turned you off from other books in this genre?

Not necessarily. I love animal stories, man/woman's best friend etc.

Would you be willing to try another one of Ralph Cosham???s performances?

    Probably not

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointment. And, I was very surprised that it had been rated so highly by other listeners. Audible listener reviews are usually a very reliable guide ofr me.

    Any additional comments?

I didn't even make it half way through this story, which is very unusual for me. I've listened to hundreds of books over the past 6 or 7 years, and there have only been two or three that I've abandoned without finishing.

Why we think it’s a great listen: The most celebrated performance in all of Audible’s history, The Help has nearly 2,000 5-star reviews from your fellow listeners. We hear the print book’s not bad, either. In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women - mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends - view one another.

Set on both sides of the Atlantic, Zadie Smith's third novel is a brilliant analysis of family life, the institution of marriage, intersections of the personal and political, and an honest look at people's deceptions. It is also, as you might expect, very funny indeed.
