I enjoyed the read and recommend it to anyone who enjoys alternate reality/urban fantasy. Using a different viewpoint character than stories to date was refreshing.
The current style is strong female lead characters and Gunmetal Magic fits this mold.
Ms Raudman has good voice distinction between the characters in the book. If you listen to other titles in the series her male characters are similar sounding. The book was well read.
The entire series makes great light reading and is a good traveling companion.
The book is a first-person, dry, narrative of a series of training and mission events. It could be the "and this is the Seals" manual issued to prospective team members to discourage them from joining. The book is informative but lacks a sense of adventure. There is no suspense or building tension.
This potentially fascinating series of stories are written like mission briefs. We rarely get any building suspense or sense of adventure.
This is the story of the narrator's life and there are no other characters of consequence.
We normally use audio books as traveling entertainment. We lasted 6 hours waiting for him to get out of training and do something interesting. Never happened.
