Love the ideas behind "The Start-Up of You". A-B-Z plan, continuously invest in yourself, be aware of your network and nurture it. I have no plans of changing jobs and still got a lot from this book. Also bought a copy for my nephew who is graduating college soon.

On a damp October night, beautiful young Ashley Cordova is found dead in an abandoned warehouse in lower Manhattan. Though her death is ruled a suicide, veteran investigative journalist Scott McGrath suspects otherwise. As he probes the strange circumstances surrounding Ashley’s life and death, McGrath comes face-to-face with the legacy of her father: the legendary, reclusive, cult-horror-film director Stanislas Cordova - a man who hasn’t been seen in public for more than thirty years.

Holy shit! This is a really good ride. And I'm really glad I listened to this in October because it gets CREEPY in parts. Not Stephen King creepy, but creepy in a good mystery way. Loved all the pop culture references and loved the characters.

Mindy Kaling has lived many lives: the obedient child of immigrant professionals, a timid chubster afraid of her own bike, a Ben Affleck–impersonating Off-Broadway performer and playwright, and, finally, a comedy writer and actress prone to starting fights with her friends and coworkers with the sentence “Can I just say one last thing about this, and then I swear I’ll shut up about it?”

When Kate, single mother and law firm partner, gets an urgent phone call summoning her to her daughter's exclusive private school, she's shocked. Amelia has been suspended for cheating, something that would be completely out of character for her over-achieving, well-behaved daughter. Kate rushes to Grace Hall, but what she finds when she finally arrives is beyond comprehension. Her daughter is dead.

Soooo good! Didn't ever want to put this one down. I've heard this compared to Gossip Girl and Gone Girl, and I totally agree. There is definitely a Gossip Girl vibe because the novel takes place in a posh high school, but it's not as teeny-bop as Gossip Girl. It's more like Gossip Girl meets Body of Proof. And the Gone Girl comparisons are due to the story telling style. There are two timelines: one of the mother moving forward and finding out what happened to her daughter; and another reverse timeline from her daughter's point of view which is delivered to the reader through the daughter's texts, emails, and even her own story. I love that the author kept things moving around like that. It seemed to keep the story fast-paced and keep me on my toes. The story is so juicy I found myself wanting to gossip with my friends about things that happened in the novel. Full of secrets and totally delish!

A middle-aged man returns to his childhood home to attend a funeral. He is drawn to the farm at the end of the road, where, when he was seven, he encountered a most remarkable girl, Lettie Hempstock. Forty years earlier, a man committed suicide in a stolen car at this farm at the end of the road. Like a fuse on a firework, his death lit a touchpaper. The darkness was unleashed, something scary and thoroughly incomprehensible to a little boy. And Lettie - magical, comforting, wise beyond her years - promised to protect him, no matter what.

So happy that Neil Gaiman decided to narrate this novel himself. His creepy tone emphasized just the right parts that you know he was thinking when he wrote it. The story keeps you intrigued and I really liked the ending. At under six hours, it's a super easy "read", but one that keeps you thinking about it long after you are done listening.

I think it was the New York Times that commented on this book being like a scavenger hunt, and I totally agree. Like other Dan Brown books, I had as much fun searching around on Google for places and art referenced in this novel as I did listening to the story. This is a fun read with lots of twists in classic Dan Brown style. There are also some interesting questions asked about humanity which are hard to think about. But watch out, you will want to get on a plane and visit Florence after the first few chapters to see all the amazing things described in this book.

Colette Baron-Reid understands the real reason many of us struggle to lose weight and keep it off. It isn't that we don't know what to eat or that we don't have enough willpower; it's that we are responding to feeling too much. Weight Loss for People Who Feel Too Much focuses on the keys to weight loss for sensitive people: managing empathy, setting and maintaining healthy boundaries, eating to support well-being, and dealing with challenging situations that can trigger disordered eating.

This book provides an approach to changing your mental perspective, not a diet. Colette Baron-Reid is a life coach that suggests unique ways to make time for yourself each day to focus on what is going on with you so that you don't just grab another snack. Some of her suggestions may seem weird or a bit much at first (daily salt baths!), but TRY THEM! I tried most of the things suggested and it was really amazing and what a calming transformation I had. Some of these things I like so much I will keep a life-long practices (salt baths!). She offers lots of good questions for journal exercises which are time consuming, but really get you thinking. Following this plan will give you a really good shift to start seeing patterns in your life differently. Highly recommended (and not just for people who want to lose weight).

The rules for living in the real world have changed, because the world we live in has changed. Much of the conventional wisdom the last generation has passed on just doesn't apply like it once did. If you want to win, and win big, and, more importantly, keep what you work so hard for, you need a crystal-clear view of how the real world works - not how you wish it worked, but how it actually works.

    Story

We all have those people in our lives. The ones that know how to work us just the right way to get us to do things they want leaving us feeling taken advantage of. With this book, Dr. Phil sheds light on what goes on in the minds of these people. And identifies keys to look out for to not get taken advantage of in life. At some point, you realize everything provided is common sense. And some of the descriptions of these people are really over the top (best saved for REALLY bad people). But it's interesting to see such common behaviors pointed out for so many people. Listening to Dr. Phil's descriptions even sheds a little light on your own behavior and maybe things that you yourself do that may be unintentionally hurtful to others in your life. He said he wrote this book to let his grand kids know about how people out there really can be. For them to be aware and not naive walking through life. I think reading through what he has to say, with it all in one place, is very eye-opening because it puts together a bunch of little pieces of things that you already know and gives you a good understanding of people in general.

It is Nick and Amy Dunne's fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick's clever and beautiful wife disappears from their rented McMansion on the Mississippi River. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn't doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media - as well as Amy's fiercely doting parents - the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he's definitely bitter - but is he really a killer?

Listened to this to get in the mood for Halloween. I really liked this book! It may be the first scary book I've read and I didn't know if I'd enjoy a scary book but I'm glad I tried it out. There are LOTS of music references in this book too which makes it even more enjoyable if you are familiar with rock music of the last 60 years. Yes, I got a bit scared when listening to it while driving at nights, but there were also lots of points when I couldn't stop. So this is one I definitely recommend.

I feel they lay out ways to be a good communicator that can be applied to many aspects of your life.
