New discoveries in archaeology and recent bestsellers and movies such as The Da Vinci Code and The Passion of the Christ have sparked a renaissance of the many controversies that have remained unanswered in Christianity and other religions. At the heart of these controversies is Jesus. With a unique perspective only Sylvia Browne could bring, The Mystical Life of Jesus is filled with the details of Jesus' inspiring life.

    Story
What made the experience of listening to The Mystical Life of Jesus the most enjoyable?

That the impressions Sylvia received from her guide is compatible with the recent papers submitted by deep Biblical scholars regarding the unedited (by the early and subsequent versions of "the church") life of the historical Jesus Christ.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Mystical Life of Jesus?

The plot with Pontius Pilate. Something that I had never before considered, but plausible. Very stimulating idea.

What does Jeanie Hackett bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Excellent inflection, timing, and timbre of her voice.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Smiled a great deal and stirred my heart deeply.

    Any additional comments?

I highly recommend to all Sylvia Brown fans. One of her best.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Seabiscuit was a runaway success, and Hillenbrand’s done it again with another true-life account about beating unbelievable odds. On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared.....

Annie M. says: "Hillenbrand could make even laundry fascinating!"

Would you consider the audio edition of Unbroken to be better than the print version?

I didn't have the print edition for comparison.

What other book might you compare Unbroken to and why?

Dalai Lama,"beyond religion". Because it is a story of one man's suffering and eventual redemption. The Dalai speaks of humans as having this divine gift of overcoming suffering and finding their spiritual essence. Louis Zamperini is one of those humans. He endured more than seemed possible for one man to endure and love was the driving force in his redemption.

Which character – as performed by Edward Herrmann – was your favorite?

    Louis and Phil.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The calm day in the raft when they became enlightened sitting in the calm beauty of the sea and sky.

The frontiersmen were a remarkable breed of men. They were often rough and illiterate, sometimes brutal and vicious, often seeking an escape in the wilderness of mid-America from crimes committed back east. In the beautiful but deadly country which would one day come to be known as West Virginia, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois, more often than not they left their bones to bleach beside forest paths or on the banks of the Ohio River.

If you could sum up The Frontiersmen in three words, what would they be?

    Intriguing. Inspiring. Solid.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Simon Butler. He embodies the spirit of the American explorer.

Which character – as performed by Kevin Foley – was your favorite?

    Greathouse.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

  • Beyond Religion: Ethics for a Whole World

    • UNABRIDGED (5 hrs and 43 mins)

The Dalai Lama, at his most compassionate and outspoken, here elaborates and deepens his vision for the nonreligious way. Transcending the mere "religion wars", he outlines a system of secular ethics that gives tolerant respect to religion, those that ground ethics in a belief in God and an afterlife, and those that understand good actions as leading to better states of existence in future lives. And yet, with the highest level of spiritual and intellectual authority, the Dalai Lama makes a claim for what he calls a third way.

    "Absolutely engrossing."

If you could sum up Beyond Religion in three words, what would they be?

    Simple. Practical. Beautiful.

What other book might you compare Beyond Religion to and why?

I can think of no other who has offered such a global scope of religious synopsis tempered with scientific progress without advocating for one view over the other, as has been done for centuries. His Holiness offers a unique view, as he is uniquely qualified to speak to us as one who was born into an humble family, raised in privilege, yet lives in exile.

What does Martin Sheen bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I enjoyed the way that Martin Sheen emphasized words and syllables, with tone and timbre he caused me to forget that this was Martin Sheen performing and not the Dalai Lama himself speaking, many times.
