No one I know because a book that long has to have a lot more going for it than this one does.
Something by Bryce Courtney
He redeemed the book somewhat with his portrayals of the characters
Impatience, disbelief, boredom
I read a lot of books and a variety of authors. It was with DISBELIEF that this book won a Pulitzer - it must have been for the length. I am glad I listened rather than read it. I doubt I would have made it through the printed pages and pages. What a great example of " less is more".
Court Gentry. Great name for a badass guy who doesn't want to be a badass guy.
Reacher books somewhat; Suarez books, deMille books
Didn't distract from the storyline
It wasn't that kind of book. Unbelievable but lots of fun
Just enjoy it as a good read.
A better reader to start with. I felt I was being read to from a young adult book. There was absolutely no zip to it considering the tale it was telling.
A different reader - not so dragged out. This is one of the first books I have read in a long time that I didn't finish. I found I could drive miles and be distracted by something else and didn't miss enough of the book to rewind.
ID give it a try - i find not all readers are for all books- except perhaps Humphrey Bowers.
It could have been an intriguing story but is was too dragged out - or the reader didnt do it justice. I'm still puzzled by that one. It could be a combination of both. Or just the translation
This book is as other Bryce Courtenay's books - a very good read, with various points of view from his protagists, well researched, and just plain interesting. The narrator is my very favorite. As for the "unchristian" statement in another review, I think the reviewer was pretty off base and perhaps should stick to fairy tales.
I loved The Potato Factory and Tommo and Hawk. I also liked Solomon's Song but it didn't seem to hang together with the first two books. Courtenay should have written a separate book about the First World War and had the third book continued with the saga started in the first two books. A good share of the third book was Ben and the war, little about the Hawk/Benjamin, Joshua/Ben relationahip and the business.
