Under the plain gray skirts of Miss Beatrice Lockwood’s gown, a pistol waits at the ready. For Beatrice is a paid companion on a secret mission - and with a secret past - and she must be prepared to fight for her life at any moment. Yet she is thrown oddly off guard by the fierce-looking man who joins her in foiling a crime outside a fancy ball - and then disappears into the shadows, leaving only his card. His name is Joshua Gage....

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

a reader less inclined to making every word sound like "purple prose"

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

simply not the author's best effort

What didn’t you like about Justine Eyre’s performance?

    constantly overdone melodramatic reading

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

disappointment in the author and disgust at the reader.

    Any additional comments?

gave up on listening after 24%. Obtained the print copy and completed the book. Much better.

Three lovers who stalk and kill the immortals that drift through South Florida (tourists are a moveable feast, after all) are living a simple life of leisure- until one of them is nearly killed by a woman who is a new kind of lethal. When Ring Hardigan isn't making sandwiches for, and with, his two partners, Waleska and Risa (they're cool like that), he's got a busy schedule doing the dirty work of sending immortals to the ever after.

Very enjoyable and well written. Good balance of information and background. No excessive detailing of either methods of ingathering financial aspects of dispatched killers or fine points of erotica. Just enough without becoming boring or clinical. Decidedly well plotted, and finely designed at the end to leave the reader panting for the next book.
Audio performer well suited, and did an excellent rendering.

Nellie Bly, born Elizabeth Jane Cochran on May 5, 1864, was an American journalist, author, and charity worker who received initial renown after writing a stinging expose of the mistreatment of the mentally ill while faking insanity and living undercover at a New York mental institution. At a time when women were just beginning to break into the field of journalism, the type of undercover investigative reporting undertaken by Bly set an important precedent, allowing her to successfully pioneer working in the male dominated field of newspaper writing.

fast paced and well plotted and detailed. Characterizatons are clear, dialog fun. My only caveat is that the narrator sounded bored, not engaged. Have to confess to hunting down the ebook about a third of the way through. That is so not normal for me. Lilly was OK with it, and we both want to go to the rest of the series ASAP!

Victorian romance mixes seamlessly with elegant prose and biting wit—and werewolves—in Gail Carriger’s delightful debut novel. Soulless introduces Alexia Tarabotti, a parasol-wielding Londoner getting dangerously close to spinster status. But there are more important things than finding a husband. For Alexia was born without a soul, giving her the ability to render any vampire or werewolf completely powerless.

Heard this book first on a sale and a whim. Then went on to acquire the whole series. Recently acquired the Manga, and while I found it disappointing, college student grandson preferred that format (boobs). College student granddaughter, on the other hand, loved the paperback but promptly went and NOOKed the whole series. Emil Gray did a fantastic job as the audio performer.

As the mysterious leader of the Bastion Club, known as “Dalziel,” Royce Varisey, tenth Duke of Wolverstone, served his country for decades, facing dangers untold. But as the holder of one of England’s most august noble titles, he must now take on the gravest duty of all: marriage. Yet the young ladies the grande dames would have him consider are predictably boring. Far more tempting is his castle’s willful and determinedly aloof chatelaine, Minerva Chesterton. Beneath her serene façade lies a woman of smoldering sensuality, one who will fill his days with comfort....

We've all been impressed and possibly intimidated by this man who led the Bastion Club members through the last 15 years of the Napoleonic wars. Here his character and personality are illuminated, as is that of the woman who has been too aware of him since she was a child. Insightful, wry, and with the obligatory erotica well done. A must read in the Bastion Club collection.
