The picture was a warning: they'd found her. For eight years Grace Archer hoped this day wouldn't come, and knew in her heart that it would. She'd taken her daughter, Frankie, to a rural Alabama horse farm that might just as well have been at the end of the earth. But the man out to kill them would gladly follow them that far. And now, it seems, he had.

Scott says: "More like a Harlequin Romance"
    "Disappointed"
    Overall

I was very disappointed with this book. I've read (not listened to) other books by her & liked them. This one made it obvious that she has reverted back to her Harlequin days. She spent too much time exploring their "should I do him/her, or not" feelings instead of developing the plot, the characters personalities, & some ACTION!!!

    The story is great. Suspenseful.
A British accent is great for a story based in the UK, not in the US. Somehow, the hick or southern drawl is not very convincing when attached to a polished English accent! 😉

Colene does not know what to think of the stranger she has rescued. Darius tells her he has traveled from "his reality" to find her. In proving to Colene that other worlds do exist, he uses up the power of the artifact that would allow them to travel back to his universe.

What would have made Virtual Mode better?

This book seemed to be condoning pedophilia. It was fantasy alright. A grown man wanting a 14 year old girl to fall in love with him!

Would you ever listen to anything by Piers Anthony again?

    NEVER

How did the narrator detract from the book?

I guess I just figure that a narrator would read what they like, so.......

What character would you cut from Virtual Mode?

    all of them

Deep in the stacks of Oxford's Bodleian Library, young scholar Diana Bishop unwittingly calls up a bewitched alchemical manuscript in the course of her research. Descended from an old and distinguished line of witches, Diana wants nothing to do with sorcery; so after a furtive glance and a few notes, she banishes the book to the stacks. But her discovery sets a fantastical underworld stirring, and a horde of daemons, witches, and vampires soon descends upon the library.

Would you try another book from Deborah Harkness and/or Jennifer Ikeda?

Deborah - maybe. She seemed like she was trying to do Diana Gabaldon & Charlaine Harris; but failed.
This could've been condensed down by 1/2 & been a WHOLE lot more interesting. How many times do you have to say that he's a vampire, or a witch, or a demon? A few times is all that is needed - even for my short-term memory! I found that the most irritating of the whole book.
It could've been an interesting story if all of the romance was cut by 75% too.

Jennifer - definitely. I found her voice easy to listen to, & thought that she did great character voices.

  • The Whiskey Rebellion

A gripping and provocative tale of violence, alcohol, and taxes, The Whiskey Rebellion pits President George Washington and Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton against angry, armed settlers across the Appalachians. Unearthing a pungent segment of early American history long ignored by historians, William Hogeland brings to startling life the rebellion that decisively contributed to the establishment of federal authority.

Amy Redwing has dedicated her life to the Southern California organization she founded to rescue abandoned and endangered golden retrievers. Among dog lovers, she's a legend for the risks she'll take to save an animal from abuse. Among her friends, Amy's heedless devotion is often cause for concern. To widower Brian McCarthy, whose commitment she can't allow herself to return, Amy's behavior is far more puzzling and hides a shattering secret.

    "If you don't like dogs....."
    Overall

....you may start to understand us dog lovers after this one! {& if you don't - who needs you anyway} Dean had me from the beginning. I started out smiling &, every once in a while, a little laugh. And then, of course, a total shudder of horror. It amazes me how well he describes human emotions - although, sometimes I roll my eyes because there is just too much "prose". But all in all, this was an edge of your seat book. I also thought that Kirsten Kairos did a good job of narrating = VERY important!

    "Bad Narrator"
    Overall

I loved the story, so therefore listened all the way through. But Richard Cox mumbled so much, it was a chore for me. When he was doing characters' voices, he was fine. But when he was narrating, his voice would get lower and lower - it was horrible. With a decent narration, I would've rated this book a 4.

The brutal murders of three young boys paralyze the citizens of Platte City, Nebraska. What's worse is the grim realization that the man recently executed for the crimes was a copycat. When Sheriff Nick Morrelli is called to the scene of another grisly murder, it becomes clear that the real predator is still at large, waiting to kill again.

Alex does it again. Just when you think you know who-dun-it, she surprises you. I couldn't wait for my next drive (yes, I listen in the car). Maggie is a great character, can hardly wait until her next book. The narrator was a great choice too.

They dubbed him the Collector, so named for his ritual of collecting victims before disposing of them in the most heinous ways possible. FBI Special Agent Maggie O'Dell spent two years tracking him down, caught in a game of cat and mouse that left her forever marked by this killer.

Bethany says: "Problems with the narrator"
    "Love Maggie!"
    Overall

I really love Alex Kava. She writes an edge of your seat novel. Agent Maggie O'Dell is a great character; a gutsy, passionate character. I only rated this as a 3 because of the lady reading this one. She sounded like she had a bad head cold - it was annoying to listen to. I was glad this was a short novel because of that.
