  • Target: Patton: The Plot to Assassinate General George S. Patton

    • UNABRIDGED (12 hrs and 42 mins)
    • By Robert K. Wilcox
    • Narrated By Lynn Benson
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

The death of General George S. Patton is shrouded in mystery. While officially the result of an unfortunate car accident, the evidence points to a far more malevolent plot: murder. So says investigative and military journalist Robert K. Wilcox in his book Target: Patton: The Plot to Assassinate General George S. Patton. Written like a WWII spy thriller and meticulously researched, Target: Patton leads you through that fateful December day in 1945, revealing a chilling plan to assassinate General Patton.

    Any additional comments?

Patton was the greatest general America has ever produced. The Germans were mortified by him as were the Russians. A must read for all WW2 /Patton/Stalin history buffs!...Also the reader was excellent...five star *****-

  • The Bible: A Biography: Books That Changed the World

    • UNABRIDGED (6 hrs and 8 mins)
    • By Karen Armstrong
    • Narrated By Josephine Bailey
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

As the work at the heart of Christianity, the Bible is the spiritual guide for one out of every three people in the world. It is also the world's most widely distributed book, having been translated into over 2,000 languages, as well as the world's best-selling book, year after year. But the Bible is a complex work with a complicated and obscure history.

    Gary says: "Great Listen"
    "too much echo!"

WARNING - A slap back echo effect has been added to the readers voice. It's a pity because it's very distracting and ruins an already weak delivery.

  • Overthrow: America's Century of Regime Change from Hawaii to Iraq

    • UNABRIDGED (15 hrs and 13 mins)
    • By Stephen Kinzer
    • Narrated By Michael Prichard
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

"Regime change" did not begin with the administration of George W. Bush, but has been an integral part of U.S. foreign policy for more than one hundred years. Starting with the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy in 1893 and continuing through the Spanish-American War and the Cold War and into our own time, the United States has not hesitated to overthrow governments that stood in the way of its political and economic goals.

Nelson Alexander says: "What Every President Should Know"

Interesting bit of history, good pace and and well narrated. I give it 5 stars. Enjoy!

  • The Coldest Winter: America and the Korean War

    • ABRIDGED (13 hrs and 53 mins)
    • By David Halberstam
    • Narrated By Edward Herrmann

Up until now, the Korean War has been the black hole of modern American history. The Coldest Winter changes that. Halberstam gives us a masterful narrative of the political decisions and miscalculations on both sides. He charts the disastrous path that led to the massive entry of Chinese forces near the Yalu, and that caught Douglas MacArthur and his soldiers by surprise. He provides astonishingly vivid and nuanced portraits of all the major figures.

Doug says: "Almost as good as The Best and the Brightest"
    "A war story..."

It's a pretty good war story and the reader is good, my only complaint is that I would have liked more history on the root causes of the war and the why when and how Korea was divided into two separate parts.

  • Rumi: The Supreme Mystical Guide

    • ORIGINAL (54 mins)
    • By Andrew Harvey
    • Narrated By Michael Toms

Topics explored in this dialogue include: why the life and work of Rumi is relevant in today's world, what is Rumi's connection to the Divine, comparisons of Rumi and other great religious leaders, why Rumi is skeptical about language, where do you find Rumi's passion in today's world, what Rumi might be doing if he were alive today, and what is the connection between Rumi's revelations and the Sufi tradition.

    Matt says: "Subjective"

Firstly, Michael Toms is an excellent host! But I find his guest author and gay advocate Andrew Harvey's assertion that Rumi was (like himself) a homosexual and that he and his guru Shams-i-Tabrizi were somehow secretly involved in a homosexual relationship as being absurd and self serving at best. In actuality ones sexuality is irrelevant and has much more to do with the translator's perspective then Rumi's message.

  • The Modern Scholar: American Inquisition: The Era of McCarthyism

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 11 mins)
    • By Ellen Schrecker
    • Narrated By Ellen Schrecker

During the early years of the Cold War, the anti-communist witch hunt that we now call McCarthyism swept through American society. It was the most widespread and longest-lasting episode of political repression in American history. Dozens of men and women went to prison, thousands lost their jobs, and untold numbers of others saw what happened to those people and refrained from expressing controversial or unpopular ideas.

    Scott says: "A great history"
    "A real disapointment :-(("

A boring lecture on a potentially interesting subject..

  • The Diamond in Your Pocket: Discovering Your True Radiance

    • UNABRIDGED (6 hrs and 31 mins)
    • By Gangaji
    • Narrated By Gangaji

The Diamond in Your Pocket, the first major book release from Gangaji, describes our never-ending search to find fulfillment, which, paradoxically, is already present if we will only stop long enough to discover its true source.

    Darrel says: "Beyond words"
    "Could have been better.."

Though the message was reasonably positive the reading could have been a bit more upbeat.

  • The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 42 mins)
    • By Mark Twain
    • Narrated By Patrick Fraley
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

One of the greatest treats in all world literature, this masterpiece from Mark Twain inspired a literary revolution. The novel offers both brilliant humor and tragedy as Huck and Jim explore the moral dilemmas of slavery and freedom. Huck, the narrator, is shrewd, ingenious, and literal; he reports on everything he sees, which allows the listener to experience the hypocrisy of "sivilization".

Andrea says: "Terrific interpretion of an excellent story"
    "American history..."

The narration was excellent however my children didn’t appreciate the "N" word as they had never heard it used before listening to this audio book.

  • New World Coming: The 1920s and the Making of Modern America

    • UNABRIDGED (18 hrs and 15 mins)
    • By Nathan Miller
    • Narrated By Lloyd James

Jazz. Bootleggers. Flappers. Talkies. Model T Fords. Lindbergh's history-making flight over the Atlantic. The 1920s was also the decade of the hard-won vote for women, racial injustice, censorship, social conflict, and the birth of organized crime.

Charles Stembridge says: "My High School History Class Never Told"
"The narration kills it for me…"

I never made it past the first hour…very distracting the way the narrator relies so heavily on the pause switch. It reminds me of a school kid reading aloud in class while not really understanding what is being read.
