"First Time All 5 Stars!"
This is a beautiful, sad, and very plausible story. The author brings us back and forth from Japan to the USA smoothly, and shows us the complex relationships that are formed with WW11 in the background.
I also enjoyed Shanghai Girls and The Last Train from Hiroshima. It reminds me some of Snow Falling on Cedars.
The son's return trip to Japan
Maybe this would make a good movie!!
"It may be historical fiction, but it was real"
I've only experienced the audible version, but I think I may have been "bogged" down with some of the medical info had I read it in print
Our main character as he struggles with his possible personal responsibility for spreading the influenza to the young boys in his care.
I always enjoy Scott Brick very much. He helps the "sell" as I choose my audio books.
The ending was very sad ( but plausible)
I am 73 so the great influenza was before my birth, but my grandmother would talk about her 2 young sisters who died in 1918 from the flu in Norway.Another grandmother had 7 siblings die before her birth of a different outbreak in the later 1800's in Wisconsin. Thus this book peaked my interest.
"A great look into North Dakota reservation life."
Informative sadness compassion
The honesty of the story and characters. The positive and negative.
Excellent. I truly felt that he was the author and main character as he read.
I grew up in N.Dak., and tho white, I am well aware of the problems on the reservations and the prejudice suffered by the Natives. Even tho I smiled at the antics of some of the characters, I was also terribly sad for them.
I will be anxious to read more by this author and listen to Gary Farmer.
"Kate Morton-a wonderful storyteller."
Intriguing tender mystery
Laurel and Dorothy because of their relationship with each other
Laurel with her mother{Dorothy} as they are questioned by the police, in the nursing home, and at Dorothy's deathbed.
Dorothy
This is my first Kate Morton book, but definitely not my last. I really enjoyed the story setting and variety of character.
"Interesting Concept"
This is an interesting idea to record stories, thoughts, and history of families .
I have not
No
Not sure
I haven't done the kind of recording talked about, but because our grandchildren lived a great distance from us, we would read books on tape for them. Now the grandchildren are much older, but still play and treasure the recordings of grandpa that passed away 7yrs ago.
"Not Baldacci's Best"
A good story, but a little far fetched? I did not like the sound effects.
As I said, a little far fetched. Great for those liking a lot of "action".
Having male and female voices was good.
Not for my liking. Two John Puller books are enough. In fairness, I don't care for books that use the same characters over and over.
I am a David Baldacci's fan, so I will continue to get his books even if this one was not one of my favorites.
"Very good read"
Yes I would. My granddaughter had this book as required reading , and she thought. I'd enjoy the story. I was pleasantly surprised how much I liked this older book.
Maybe not on the edge of my seat, but held my interest, and I was eager to keep reading.
She has a very pleasant voice to listen to, and really makes you feel the character is telling the story.
The same
Discussing books and opinions is fun, and particularly
with my granddaughters .
"Very good read!"
I was born in 1939, so could really relate to the "fear" surrounding the threat of Polio, especially during the summer months. I had a classmate who was crippled with this disease, and her life leaves me with feelings of sadness , as does the main character.
When this man of talents and compassion gives up the most important things in his life, as he thinks best. Tho we the listeners do not.
He really makes the listener feel that our main character is speaking.
Perhaps the girlfriend. I really must persuade her to work harder on this relationship--even now.
I will read and listen to more by these two.
"Interesting setting"
The setting at the Vatican gave a different spin to a murder mystery.
Gabriel --his character is well developed
He brings the characters alive.
Not quite
No
"Definitely a teen read."
I finished this book, and it was ok, but really not very interesting for an adult,
Probably just fine for young adults or teens.
Narration was good.
