I want everyone to hear this wonderful story. It is one of the best I have ever heard (read) and will remain one of my favorites. I know I am in love with Simone Fluerier the main character. The novel is filled with suspense, merriment, love, sadness and other emotions that follow us through life. Kate Hood's narration is superb and she has command of all the varied voices in this book.
Historians of this period 1930-1945 will find this novel highly researched and informative equal to any historical fiction even though the book is not. I felt as though I was in Paris as the Germans filled the city. Don't miss this one if you like life stories wonderfully told.
Funny, Audible's number one best sellers are fluctuating between 50 Shades and Gone Girl.
True, they are both about couples and they are both a look into the minds of some really interesting people in unusual relationships. It would be "nuclear" if Amy and Nick could meet Christian and Anastasia in the Hunger Games. One thing is for sure, this novel is a wild ride through one of the best stories of intrige that I've listened to in a long time. I was trained on Conan Doyle and have gotten pretty good at figuring out what's going to happen next in an inticate plot. At first I thought this one was going to be a piece of cake but it was anything but easy. This book is loaded with suspense, twists and turns, and it sends your emotions into extremes. There are so many plot possibilities at so many easily accommodated turns in the book that you will not be able to put it down in your impatience to see if you have called Amy's or Nick's next move correctly. The performance is outstanding, too. Crime fiction has never been so good. Sir Arthur would be proud.
If you didn't live on earth and follow the Casey Anthony matter, this book is for you. If you watched Nancy Grace every night from the day Caylee went missing and all the In Session and HLN courtroom reports and the actual trial, this book is you. Mr. Aston follows the exact timeline from the first day he was assigned the trial. He explains the prosecutions rationale and actions in great detail. His comment on the motivations of the people involved and his perceptions of their actions adds insights that even the most obsessive watcher will be intrigued with. He covers each element of the trial, the attorneys??? actions, body language, strategies, the judge???s actions, etc. It???s all there for you to see and learn what was going on. Those who say there is nothing new in Mr. Ashton???s book are as wrong as Casey is not guilty. His treatment of the infamous Jose Baez is not to be missed. If you are a lay person like me in jurisprudence, your eyes will be opened by the behavior of this smarmy lawyer. Nevertheless, his book is very balanced and he points out his biases clearly ??? especially about ???Baez???. If you thought the jury was lazy, mindless and suffering from get homeitus, this in my opinion confirms it .
Mr. Ashton reads his own book and if he is looking for a new career he has found it. Watch out Simon Vance. While his written word provides us a great look at Mr. Ashton??? personality, his spoken words only made me wish I knew him personally. He is easy to listen to. I felt like we were sitting in a restaurant over lunch discussing the whole Casey Anthony deal. He didn???t leave Caylee out of the book either like the jury left her out of the trial and their minds.
Use your credit and listen to this book. If nothing more it will console you somewhat over this miscarriage of justice.
The book stated slowly for me but after a few hours I was engrossed in the history of the period and the adventure of the story. Once you realize how hated and hunted the papists of old england where during this period the enjoyment of the plot increases significantly. The villans are well developed in their evilness and deeds. The book becomes fast paced as the plot unfolds and you will find yourself captivated. There is a touch of Victorian eroticism in the story and a love story too. The violence is not excessive. This is not one the novels that disappoints at it's conclusion. Sherlock Holmes would enjoy this adventure! The superior performance by Simon Vance willl confirm once again that he is one of the best if not the best.
This book is an exciting and fast moving snapshot of WWII right after the invasion. It is historically accurate and weaves a fast moving plot with a love story that spans Europe and Great Britian. I believe anyone looking to be entertained will like this book especially those who like the WWII time period. The narration is also excellent.
This is by far one of the best books I've ever listened to. I thought there would never be another as good or better than Pillars of the Earth but Follett has triumphed with this sequel. It is rich in plot and characters and one can listen to the book and feel as though you were living in 1350. All human emotions are brought forth by the author and the battle between good and evil is ever present. The novel is a history lesson unto its own and while the environment is ancient the troubles and pleasures of life described by Follett are the same as today. Listen or read this book.
