At first I wondered where this story could go, but was intrigued and couldn't 'put it down'. Little by little I was drawn into Smithy's story. At first I though the narrator's voice was a little ordinary and unemotional, but soon I realized it was perfect for Smithy! I have passed this on to other Audible readers in the family, and continue to think about it after finishing. I recommend it, definitely. It ranks pretty high for me for this year, so far!

I had no idea what I was about to read, since I first downloaded this is 2005 and never got around to it. I'm sitting at our 'camp' in the Thousand Islands area of New York on a rainy day thinking there's no where else like this. Time for a new book, and out rolls a story so similar to our summer life here. I perked up. All the issues of mice, daily food shopping for dinner, enjoying the outdoors, the boat, the weather, the water, mosquitos...yes, the geology of this granite mounded place. My husband has also spent hours working on his own deer fly-zapper! Like Sterba, we live in a big, congested, busy city which we love for the other half of the year, yet we revel in the the simple life here, rain in the canopy of trees that barely reaches me on the ground, the summer T-storms, the simplicity of life here. We often welcome friends but warn them there's little to do compared to many standard vacation places, and yet we hate leaving. I thoroughly enjoyed this story - is it a little slow? Oh yes, in the best possible way.

My husband and I read this book several years ago, and on a cross-country trip this summer we easily agreed it was one we could enjoy hearing again. Having just listened to Will Patton narrate The Glass Rainbow, we were reminded what an evocative reader he is and how much he brought to the beautiful story and language of Thirteen Moons. Having taught some of this history to 5th graders, I found wonderful passages to share with them. The strength and clarity of these characters came through in the writing of the story. We highly recommend it. For those who have suggested it is a slow read, I'd say it is, and pleasurably so.

Like other reviewers, it took me a while to get going with this, but I was always interested enough to return for more, and am very glad I did. It was never boring - just that such a long saga left a lot of possibilities. Wonderfully written with humor, pathos and fascinating facts and focus of another time and another place. Well worth reading. I'm going to check on what else the author has written!

What a nice suprise to find a new author and set of characters - well delineated, interesting, compelling. Apparently, it's one of a trilogy, the next one coming out late June. Starts a little slow, just a little, but well worth sticking with. The girl is really a new voice in a story and I hope she appears in the next book too. My husband and I both liked it, so give it a try.

This seemed a little slow at first, but that turned out to be just the right voice and tone for this story that spans generations. It was always intriguing and engaging. I often sat in my driveway waiting for a good part to finish before going in to the house from work. The historical reminders were woven in well - it's just a plain old good story and I was sorry when it ended.

I've enjoyed a real connection with Kingsolver's works in the past, and was thrilled to see this available on Audible. I felt like Barbara Kingsolver was reading this to me personally as I drove to work. Her narration is superb. It's a beautiful, literate, lyrical, fascinating story, and I was sorry when it finished. Maybe the best since Kite Runner. I highly recommend it.

I was dismayed by the reviews which suggested the narration might spoil this audiobook for me since I had already downloaded the book. Though I didn't especially like the voice given to the main female character I ended up thinking it fit her well - high pitched, exciteable, brittle, forced at times. Anyway, the story was compelling, the situations interesting and not predictable. Sometimes I wondered what the story was really about, but it didn't matter. Eventually, it all came together in the Epilogue, and I'm glad I read it. It is long, and I was a bit unsure when the Love Canal story line came along, but still, hung in there and glad I did. I do recommend the book (it might be a girl-book), and it was a good way to experience JCO for the first time in a long time.

My husband read this first and I thought it sounded like a guy book. I was so wrong. This book was fascinating, and held my interest until the end. It would be hard to believe if it was fiction, but every detail pulls you into real characters, well fleshed out. They and their mission drew me in. I highly recommend this book.

I have read all of this series, and this is my first Audible version. I enjoyed it thoroughly. The narrator fit perfectly for Kinsey's character and attitude, and the other characters came through well also. The plot was a little different than her previous stories, and I enjoyed that change-up as well. Very readable, and I wanted to hear it all.
