The Good House tells the story of Hildy Good, who lives in a small town on Boston's North Shore. Hildy is a successful real-estate broker, good neighbor, mother, and grandmother. She's also a raging alcoholic. Hildy's family held an intervention for her about a year before this story takes place - "if they invite you over for dinner, and it’s not a major holiday," she advises "run for your life" - and now she feels lonely and unjustly persecuted. She has also fooled herself into thinking that moderation is the key.

Rhonda Morrison says: "What a great book, Hildy is a great character!"
    "What an awful voice"

Be sure to listen to the reader before you buy. the reader gave her own interpretation by her voice with no room for your own thought. It was like the nails on the chalkboard.

Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia to be raised in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles. “The best of all the Greeks”—strong, beautiful, and the child of a goddess—Achilles is everything the shamed Patroclus is not. Yet despite their differences, the boys become steadfast companions. Their bond deepens as they grow into young men and become skilled in the arts of war and medicine—much to the displeasure and the fury of Achilles’ mother, Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals.

Cariola says: "Didn't Expect to Like It, but I Was Swept Away"
"Companions equals Homosexuals? Meant for men only?"

What could Madeline Miller have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Since Greek boys were encouraged to have relations with other boys, some behavior is understandable. But Achilles not liking women at all? Come on, a hero like this?

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

retelling of the Trojan War. What style? Large or ribbed?

    Any additional comments?

I still want my money back. And Audible should have made clear the relationship so I wouldn't have bought the book.
The reader's voice and style were beautiful. What a waste.
