For years, the third moon in the Alphane system was used as a psychiatric hospital. But when war broke out between Earth and the Alphanes, the hospital was left unguarded and the inmates set up their own society, made up of competing factions based on their particular mental illnesses. When Earth sends a delegation to take back the colony, they find enclaves of depressives, schizophrenics, paranoiacs, and others uniting to repel what they see as a foreign invasion.

Philip K. Dick's books are slightly dated with their view of the near to distant future, but the story is engaging and keeps you interested throughout. The narrator does a very good job as well.

On the alien, sunless planet they call Eden, the 532 members of the Family shelter beneath the light and warmth of the Forest's lantern trees. Beyond the Forest lie the mountains of the Snowy Dark and a cold so bitter and a night so profound that no man has ever crossed it. The Oldest among the Family recount legends of a world where light came from the sky, where men and women made boats that could cross the stars. These ships brought us here, the Oldest say - and the Family must only wait for the travelers to return.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I got this book for the wife and I to listen to on a trip...

I was very pleased with the story, but it was really brought to life by the wonderful narrating. I would gladly listen to this again in the future!

More than anything, Joel wants to be a Rithmatist. Chosen by the Master in a mysterious inception ceremony, Rithmatists have the power to infuse life into two-dimensional figures known as Chalklings. Rithmatists are humanity’s only defense against the Wild Chalklings - merciless creatures that leave mangled corpses in their wake. Having nearly overrun the territory of Nebrask, the Wild Chalklings now threaten all of the American Isles.

I wasn't very impressed with with the Alcatraz series, but I can't help but read anything that Brandon Sanderson writes so I gave this a shot. Sanderson is in his typical form and despite the young adult audience, he creates another wonderful world and keeps you interested throughout the whole book. Michael Kramer, whom I think is probably the most talented narrator around, delivers another strong performance. I can't wait for the next book, but I hope the next Stormlight book comes out first!

A human diplomat creates an interstellar incident when he kills an alien diplomat in a most unusual way. To avoid war, Earth's government must find an equally unusual object: A type of sheep ("The Android's Dream"), used in the alien race's coronation ceremony. To find the sheep, the government turns to Harry Creek, ex-cop, war hero and hacker extraordinaire.

Will Wheaton does an outstanding job with the narration despite Scalzi's almost too often sarcasm/clever banter. Don't get me wrong, the banter is most of the reason I read Scalzi, but it almost seems to get in the way of ever having meaningful dialogue. If you like Scalzi's other work, you'll really enjoy this book!
