The story begins in 1962. On a rocky patch of the sun-drenched Italian coastline, a young innkeeper, chest-deep in daydreams, looks out over the incandescent waters of the Ligurian Sea and spies an apparition: a tall, thin woman, a vision in white, approaching him on a boat. She is an actress, he soon learns, an American starlet, and she is dying. And the story begins again today, half a world away, when an elderly Italian man shows up on a movie studio's back lot - searching for the mysterious woman he last saw at his hotel decades earlier.

What disappointed you about Beautiful Ruins?

I do not like stories that are constant flashbacks and this one was...The parts about Michael Dean were trite and boring

Has Beautiful Ruins turned you off from other books in this genre?

I do not know what the hype is about this book....too much bouncing around from past to present.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

Telll the story "straight" from 1962 to present....no flashbacks...I was left wondering how Dee married Bender until almost the end.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

I only liked the parts that took place in Italy...I liked the narrator

    Any additional comments?

    Overrated...don't waste credit on this

Moses McGuire has good reason to be concerned about his beautiful 23-year-old daughter, Brittany. She moves quickly from one boyfriend to the next, and always seems to prefer a new and mysterious stranger to a man she knows something about. But her most recent ex, Rick Jessup, isn’t willing to let her go, culminating in a terrible night when Brittany is raped. Within 24 hours, Rick Jessup is dead, Moses McGuire is the prime suspect in the investigation, and Dismas Hardy has been hired to defend his brother-in-law.

I have yet to be disappointed with a John Lescroart book. I have read/listened to all the books in the series and even though it's been a while, I fell right back in with Abe, Treya and the gang and the infamous "Lous". Lescroart is the master of courtroom thrillers and well developed characters. I was glued to it and did not want it to end. Make it your next Audible purchase.

I read "Sister of my Heart" and thought that was terrific, but this story of Indian culture was up there with "Shantaram". While the main character embarks on a journey to the US which some may say "yeah boring", it turns out to be pivotal point in the lives and loves of all the richly described characters. I was glued to this one. I look forward to more from Chitra!

Stoneybridge is a small town on the west coast of Ireland where all the families know one another. When Chicky Starr decides to take an old, decaying mansion set high on the cliffs overlooking the windswept Atlantic Ocean and turn it into a restful place for a holiday by the sea, everyone thinks she is crazy. Helped by Rigger (a bad boy turned good who is handy around the house) and Orla, her niece (a whiz at business), Chicky is finally ready to welcome the first guests to Stone House’s big warm kitchen, log fires, and understated elegant bedrooms.

I have been a fan of Maeve Binchy since "Light a Penny Candle" and have read all of her books. This one did not meet the mark. I found it more like a series of vignettes rather than a novel. Too many characters to keep me engaged for any length of time. I enjoyed the narrator and the book had some lighthearted moments but not like any of her other novels.

Freeman, the new novel by Leonard Pitts, Jr., takes place in the first few months following the Confederate surrender and the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Upon learning of Lee's surrender, Sam - a runaway slave who once worked for the Union Army - decides to leave his safe haven in Philadelphia and set out on foot to return to the war-torn South. What compels him on this almost-suicidal course is the desire to find his wife, the mother of his only child, whom he and their son left behind 15 years earlier on the Mississippi farm to which they all "belonged".

I rarely give so many "stars" to an Audible book but this one truly deserves it. The story was well written, the characters were "fleshed out" and it all merged into a crescendo plot, expertly done, beautifully done, expertly narrated....Go get it!

But when a string of bizarre murders erupts across several Manhattan hotels, NYPD Lieutenant D'Agosta asks his friend Pendergast for help.

Take one from Column A (aimless) and One from Column B (borrowed plot) and you have a not so savory cold and flat addition to this great series.

As a big Preston/Child fan, I looked forward to “Two Graves” and have come to the conclusion that the authors are running out of steam. While I saw glimpses of the usually surprising yet eccentric Pendergast, they were few and far between. The borrowed plot was unforgiveable for writers of this caliber.

Yoshitaka, who was about to leave his marriage and his wife, is poisoned by arsenic-laced coffee and dies. His wife, Ayane, is the logical suspect - except that she was hundreds of miles away when he was murdered. The lead detective, Tokyo Police Detective Kusanagi, is immediately smitten with her and refuses to believe that she could have had anything to do with the crime. His assistant, Kaoru Utsumi, however, is convinced Ayane is guilty. While Utsumi’s instincts tell her one thing, the facts of the case are another matter.

I enjoyed listening to "Salvation of a Saint" as I was a fan of the first book with Detective Kusinagi. The author reveals the suspect and keeps the "how" for last....a bit drawn out but still a good listen. I would definitely listen to another book from this author.

Boston, 1926. The ‘20s are roaring. Liquor is flowing, bullets are flying, and one man sets out to make his mark on the world. Prohibition has given rise to an endless network of underground distilleries, speakeasies, gangsters, and corrupt cops. Joe Coughlin, the youngest son of a prominent Boston police captain, has long since turned his back on his strict and proper upbringing. Now having graduated from a childhood of petty theft to a career in the pay of the city's most fearsome mobsters, Joe enjoys the spoils, thrills, and notoriety of being an outlaw.

I have read all of Dennis Lehane's books and this is by far the best one yet! The black sheep son who becomes a seasoned gangster with love and "demon rum" along the way.
Lehane elevates the story by taking it out of Boston and New York City and luring the reader to Tampa and Cuba where the unexpected await. I thought the narrator was very good...

Bonnie and Clyde, they thought. And what's-his-name, the sidekick. Three teenagers with dead-end lives, and chips on their shoulders, and guns. The first person they killed was a highway patrolman. The second was a woman during a robbery. Then, hell, why not keep on going? As their crime spree cuts a swath through rural Minnesota, some of it captured on the killers' cell phones and sent to a local television station, Bureau of Criminal Apprehension investigator Virgil Flowers joins the growing army of cops trying to run them down.

I have read all of the Lucas Davenport/Virgil Flowers book and anxiously await each new release. This book is right up there with "Bad Blood". Sanford puts you in the backseat and takes you down those country roads looking for those young killers. I would have liked to have seen the secondary plot (about the family of doctors) more developed.

Eric Congers does an excellent job of narration (which can make or break the enjoyment of any audiobook).

Where does Defending Jacob rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Defending Jacob best summer read this year.

What did you like best about this story?

I liked the unexpected twists and turns of the story, especially the end

What about Grover Gardner’s performance did you like?

Grover's performance was consistent for all the characters and very engaging

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Part One moved to a crescendo so that Part II was totally addictive and had to listen every free minute.

    Any additional comments?

Now THIS should be made into a movie! Clooney and Pitt need not apply....real people only...
