"Great reading and great writing"
This book is book written and read superbly. Anthony Heald manages to create a unique voice for every character and really makes it come alive. I only wish that the book was longer.
I read the Brothers Karamazov before reading this and now I understand why people say to read this first. I really found my appreciation of the former heightened by this work.
Though I have to say the ending left me a little disappointed, not so much because I felt it was rushed but because it was a (spoiler alert) happy ending.
I am getting a little tired of reading these greats works of Russian Literature and after all of them have expertly such the trivial nature of life, the characters find love or god and are reborn, or take a moral bath as Tolstoy put it.
But this may a more personal critique as I have neither of these things.
Overall I would heartily recommend this book
"Brilliant and haunting reading"
The narrator brought the character of Mersault and Camus philosophy to life superbly, his intonation and pronunciation perfectly echoed what I thought the character felt and had me reeling for some days afterwards, thinking if he was indeed right and if nothing really does matter.
Unlike so many other books of depression and nihilism this one (note spoiler coming) does not have a happy ending. This for me only adds to its greatness.
Overall I would definitely recommend this book and this narration.
"Absolutely Brilliant Reading"
This reading is fantastic, Jeremy Irons really uses Nabokov's writing (which is, as always splendid) to its fullest extent and makes you connect to the characters. You can feel his emotion and it is riveting.
I would recommend this audio book over all others, truly the best I have ever had the pleasure of listening to.
