I noticed that the only reviews to his 2nd and 3rd books were by the same 2 people. Mr Birmingham’s politics are obvious and his love of liberals and other progressives permeates all of his books. Like all people of his ilk he has absolutely no idea of the proper use of power and force, and his disdain for the military shows through. He does not understand technology or what would be proper military tactics, but given his persuasion that is understandable. There is no way that his super force would do what it did with the 1942 navy, nor would our navy behave the way he has them doing. Not much of his reasoning makes sense which sets up the plot and builds on it for the rest of the book and series. I did read the all three books as I loved the premise but I cringed every time his biases cam through, which was ever few minutes. He is a typical left wing wacko.
I have read every one of the books and I have thoroughly enjoyed every one. I have absolutely no problem believing in a slightly altered parallel world. The only problem I have is that I vote for Limeiran over Cat Monkey.
I am sorry but no matter how much I like zombie stories this author as well as others does not know what he is talking about. He claims that the US military is conducting this war and yet he completely forgets about the one weapon that would be useful against the Zombies. It is called a fuel air bomb, daisy cutter, MOAUB. This is the most powerful non nuclear weapon we have. Instead of nuking the cities we would drop this on them. It does not produce any radiation but would incinerate them and create a firestorm that would kill hundreds of thousands more. As far as the swarms that we are tracking in the second book the MOAUB would kill everyone in a swarm in one drop. This eliminates the mutant Zombie problem and the need to waste all of our ammo. Now I know that this eliminates his basic plot plan and would need a writer with more imagination than this guy has, but it would be a better story.
There is so much else that is wrong with this book that it would take too much time to go into it.
I have enjoyed every one of S.M Stirling’s books until now. It seemed like ½ of the book was missing. Was S.M Stirling rushed.
I really tried to like this book, I did. I read all the other reviews about how riveting it was, but it is one of the most boring books I have ever read. I know this is hard to believe for a zombie book but this guy’s plot is plodding, boring and stupid. As an example they go to extremes to acquire A.T. forklifts and flat bed trucks to move freeway concert dividers to reinforce a wire fence, when they could simply get a couple of D-9 cats and build a 30’ high earthen berm and reinforce it with ruble and concert dividers. The main character has absolutely no sense of style or purpose. He has all of the resources of the world at his disposal and people to follow his orders and he does nothing with it. Far from waiting for the next book I sincerely hope that this is the last one. I sincerely hope you do not squander your money on this book.
I found this book incredibly offensive. The right wing-conservative bashing was unbelievable. Why couldnt this guy write about left wing fascist? We all know that it is the left wing that will not allow free speech. They are the ones who want to run every tiny aspect of your life. I want my money back.
