"Pleasantly Surprised! Laugh out loud funny!"
I was unfamilar with both the author and narrator when I bought this book but it was on sale so I thought I'd give it a try. The story is well paced and interesting and the narration is AMAZING!
My husband and I have vastly different tastes and rarely agree on books but this one got a thumbs up from both of us. The characters are quirky and fun. The dialog is witty and and laugh out loud funny.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to the rest of the series!
"Try it - you might like it!"
I put off listening to this series for almost two years. It continuously showed in my recommended list but I was convinced I wouldn't like it - maybe it was the cover art???
I gave in and bought it last week because it was on sale. I listened to it immediately and was pleasantly surprised. The character of Jane is pickly and tough, not very likable at first. She has been hired by a local vampire council to hunt a rogue. Jane is uniquely qualified for the job bacuse she shares her body with Beast, a panther spirit whose body she hijacked by accident when she was a child. Jane/Beast can transform into animal form and has a well developed sense of smell.
If you can suspend your disbelief long enough to get into the story, it is fast paced and well written. The references to Cherokee culture are well researched and seamlessly integrated. The dialog is okay - not spectacluarly witty, but okay. The voice of Beast is the one dialog exception. The way Faith Hunter writes for Beast and Khristine Hvam reads it is masterful!
After resisting this series for two years, I bought the other three books after finishing this one! Don't be deceived by the cover art it hides a great story!
"Just fun!"
I have enjoyed this series from the beginning and CE Murphy doesn't disappoint with the most recent installment. I really appreciate how Jo has changed and matured from book to book. Unlike so many of the heroines in this genre, Jo fumbles around, srcews up, faces the consequences of her decisions and learns from them. Very refreshing!
Gabra Zackman does a great job conveying the humor and sarcasm inherent in the dialog.
Looking forward to seeing where this series goes from here.
"Excellent Narrator!"
I had a little trouble getting into this book...The beginning is fairly abrupt and would be confusing if you didn't read the books in order.
The attention to mythological detail thoughout this series is very impressive and the dialog is still great. That said, the story felt much darker than the previous two books. There is still plenty of humor but the tone felt different.
I'm looking forward to the next book - anxious to see if the more somber tone is the new direction of the series. The character of Ouboron continues to provide laugh out loud fun but Atticus is starting to take himself a little to seriously for my taste.
"Alternately Hysterical & Philosphical!"
Luke Daniels does a fantastic job with the narration again - The voice of Ouboron in particular is very well done.
Kevin Hearne is a gifted story teller with the ability to convey complex emotional and psychological truths in way that alternately touches the heart, makes you think, and then points out the ridiculousness of it all.
Very well done!
"sassy and suspenseful"
For fans of Sookie Stackhouse this is a great time. The narrator does a great job carrying the momentum of the book. The fast paced plot grabs and hold a listener's attention.
