Absolutely one of the best "listens" I've had in a long time.
I actually went out and bought the hardback to put in my favorites collection. I don't have a lot of contemporary fiction in my collection. At some points I had to stop to contemplate and either enjoy, or cry, or tear my hair out with frustration.
His voice was great,,some accent but totally easy to understand. It added to the culture of the book.
We read this for our book club. I would reccommend pairing this with the novel "The House of Sand and Fog".
This is the kind of book that builds understanding and empathy for those that are different from us.
I love the character, Goldy. BUT, I could not stand this reader. She made awful slurpping sounds,,,and she sounded so OLD. I cound not relate her to Goldy at all. In fact I wanted to stop listening because she made me think of Goldy as OLD,,,smacking sounds,,,gravely throat (smoker?) YECH!! Her voice reminds me of the old female doctor on the show Evergreen.
Wow! I realize how important the narrator is. I will be much more careful in my selections. If she continues to use this narrator,,I will read the rest in print.
